Where do you apply to become a counter? I suppose it's too late now but it would be useful information for next time :)

You need to speak to your local council. I once applied (first time when was a student and my Mum did it) and it was a week or so before the election!

I've already tried and failed a few weeks ago I'm afraid. Maybe try Trafford and Stockport, if they're not too far away, as I've had offers from both, even though I was meant to only be a reserve.

If you dont have another job that takes you over the threshold before you pay tax then no, when they send out the forms you tick the I dont pay tax box. It really isnt £200 for the count. I did local and general and was given £100. The election itself unless you're a presiding officer pays around £140 that's in Bradford where i've done it for the past 5 years, maybe it changes depending on how big your area is? The election you're there from 6.30am until 10.30pm so a long day, but the count for a local is around 2.5 hours, both local and general prob 4 I was there. Although be careful if you're timing it to go elsewhere as you're basically there until the boxes (the votes gone in each box) tally with the votes you count! You also get heckled at, so if you're of a nervous disposition prob not a good idea. Mind you, as I say I was in Bradford and a BNP strong area!
Sorry, what do you mean by 'done' the election. Were you a poll clerk? I presume only the Returning Officer gets heckled...?

How long, on average, will a counting assistant be needed for btw? Not that I'm in a rush or anything...other than to go to bed... :D

Probably different by place but we are offered £50 for about 4 hours - but last time (general election) they changed the counting method and counted everything twice so it took about 6 hours. I am hoping that hardly anyone votes, I think there is usually a lower turnout for local elections but with a referendum it might be higher? In our the referendum is being counted seperately.

Our ward finished in about the middle of the count (after a recount) so got to go home about 2.45 am. Off to work now and doing the referendum count at 4pm! Aargh.
    Hope you all survived.
