dont pay for your passport to be changed - I've been married and divorced and my passport is still in my maiden name!!
when it needs renewing, I will change it but not before.

i wasnt going to bother either ,as i still have 6 yrs left on it,went on honeymoon in my maiden name etc and this never bothered me :)

but i need to have proof of identity (which includes passport and driving licence )in the name i use now for a CRB check im currently undergoing

its costing me as much to just change the name as it costs to get a passport in the first instance !

My wife (sorry not sure what all the abreviations mean so I shall call her that) uses both her maiden and married name. She sometimes gets cheques in her maiden name which she then pays into our joint (married name) account. Signs on the back - no bother at all.
She did change her passport eventually as going on holiday was a pain with tickets in one name and passport in another.

Once we all have ID cards will any of this matter?
We all evolve - get on with it

Do you need your passport AND your driving licence as proof of name though? Some people have neither, so they are a bit harsh if they insist on both. I know people who have had CRB checks and don't have a passport or a driving licence.

I have a current CRB check. Did it with my driving licence and passpost - both in my maiden name, just showed them my marraige cert and they were fine. So, no, you dont need to change them just for this.

I kept my passport till it ran out, 2 years after the wedding, I was travelling a lot for work at the time and I wasn't able to get a long enough time between trips to send it off. I still have a Boots Advantage card in my first married name and no-one has ever questioned it. As my two children still have that name I sometimes get letters addressed to that name or phone calls. It's over 8 years since I changed my name.

This whole name change thing......I don't particularly want to lose my maiden name as i am an only child and my father died when I was young, and I hate the thought of his surname stoppping. Equally I don't like the thought of my children having a different surname to me!
Double barrelling can seem a bit pretentious...and anyway whose name goes first, his or mine, or is it a case of whichever way sounds better!! Does he have to take the double barreling or can i just do it!!

    Questions questions!!
    Any thoughts?

  • just write to address showing on your p60- or contact employer address for tax office- or contact local tax office and qoute tax reference on payslip and ask them to which office you should write. you need to put ni number on top of letter- suggest you get proof of posting.

Yes, I do have to change my name. I'm proud to have married my DH and I wouldn't have it any other way. It's yet another way of me showing my commitment to him for the rest of our lives. ;)

We did discuss the whole my name change/double barrelling but decided that I would take his name as it only means me changing my name as opposed to both of us changing our names.

    * In addition, we've got loads of cheques made payable to me in my married name, so I need to change the name on my bank account :D:D:D:D:D

I have been married 10 years and have never changed my passport or informed HM Revenue and Customs of a change of name - it is not an obligatory thing for women when they are married.

I also use the family surname (dh's name) for the mortgage, thaks to forgetting to tell the conveyencing solicitor that I never changed surname and it has stuck through the past 7 years (couldn't hold up house sale just for my principles!). I also use the family surname when connected with the kids as it is easier and people unfortunately do have preconceptions that we are not married when I use my own surname.

I am no less committed to my husband because I choose most of the time to keep my own surname. I don't think women should feel obliged to change their name upon marriage but sometimes it is easier to compromise with conventions you don't like.

You know, if I ever get married I don't know what I'll do ... Like Becles I'm fiercely traditional and would want to be a Mrs with the same name as my children ... But my current surname is quite unique, a variant spelling of a more common name ... My dad has done family research and found that our name just doesn't exist outside of our extended family - he even owns the "oursurname".com domain, and we all have email addresses that are myfirstname@mysurname.com! ... Yes I've had to spell it out to everybody I've ever met ... but, for example, my ex was a Jones ... I wouldn't really want that, especially with a one-syllable Christian name as well :o
