Champneys no longer a good spa, disappointing break

I have just got back from a break at Champneys Forest Mere and must say it has gradually gone down hill.

It certainly is lagging behind the modern day spa and I can think of many better places to go next time!! Royal Tunbridge Spa, Alexander House and Utopia Spa and even the Aqua Sana Spa at Center Parcs is fantastic

This an extract of my complaint of which i am awaiting a response;

1. The room was very dated, very very small and the linen disappointing and resembled that of hospital linen. There was no heated towel rail, which I find unusal as is standard in even the most basic accomodation. The taps dripped and there was no extractor fan for the amount of steam off the shower, again a very basic element to a room.
2. Every shower in the whole complex ran frezzing cold and boiling hot, not just annoying but dangerous
3. Every point where there was complimentary water, juice etc was always empty excluding the water jug by the treatment waiting room
4. On the 2nd after our evening meal we retired to the piano room for tea. The room was in a disgusting mess, cups plates and tissues on every table piled up. I was so embarrassed in front of my guest that i went and made a complaint to a lady at the departures desk. I shouldnt have to do that on a break away from doing this at home.
5. The pool lounge was the same every single time i visited it, clearly was not cleaned regularly
6. My guests robe was rancid and she chose to wear her own as it stank of oil and had yellow staining all down the inside
7. the starter of our evening meal was disappointing. I ordered "tiger prawn" salad. Considering your ethics are to be be fresh good produce, what turned up were a few cold, unseasoned, not fresh prawns that looked like they had been tipped out from a packet from Sainsburys. Not what I would expect at Champneys. The main course was luke warm and brought out in seconds, most definately not cooked to order.
8. On several occasions we were served with china that had huge chips taken out of them and covered in old tea stains
9. During one of my treatments thetherapists clearly ignored their own rules and cahtted at the top of their voices outside my door, far from relaxing. They then proceeded to run through the corriders.
10. Therapists are clearly more interested in getting you finished as quick as possible so they can do their sales speech to try and get you to buy as many products as possible, even when you have just spent £85 on a facial
11. The Jacuzzi was freezing!! I have never had a cold jacuzzi and both myself and my guest cold not use it and for the whole complex there were only 4 loungers?
12. The sauna, as you walk in on the right hand side is unstable and tiped up when you sat on it, again annoying but pretty dangerous
13. Every time my guest or I walked around the building, doors and windows were left wide open. It made the whole place freezing and unwelcoming rather than a warm relaxing environment. Many people retreated to the piano room as it seemed to be the only warm place in the building
14. The gentleman on arrivals smelt awful of body odour, it is a shame the duty manager did not feel able to address this person and deal with it

An overall very disappointing stay

Please forgive my spelling mistakes, havent had much time to write!!

You made me LOL with point 14 final comment, just to top it off.

Sounds like a nightmare rather than a relaxing stay, lets hope they address this and you get some money back

I know.. I was just peeved by the time I got to 13. I had hoped to come home feeling relaxed not to have to write a complaint,.

Well the complaint was read first thing this morning by the manager and I will post back the response, if I get one !!

you should definitely complain. In a place like champneys ( Im sure it was not cheap) you expect the highest level of service possible. One mistake you can forgive but that many is taking the mick.
  • I was disappointed to read of a members bad experience at the hands of the Forest Mere Helath Farm.
I was there 2 weeks ago and as usual my experience was wonderful. I always 'buy' the cheapest room because i prefer to spend on the treatments. This time my room was delightful and as usual the treatments devine. As a full time worker and a tiring family its great to get away from it all and spoil myself and this time i tempted my firends to join me and they have booked again for the Autumn. As a first time break to a Health Spa i dont think Forest Mere can be faulted. Other Spa's i felt have a air of making me feel i shouldnt be there because i dont wreak of money or status.
The Body Bliss treatment and Thalassotherapy pool are my favourites. I'm going again for a friends birthday in 2 weeks just for the day and i'm hoping this will giver her a taster for a longer trip next time. I urge the unsatisfied guest to call or write to Forest Mere and ask for Mavis (i think she is in Guest Liason) when i did have a problem before she made it better and has looked after me since.. i'm sure she will look into the problems and make sure they dont happen again.
Good luck.. i certainly will be goinjg back...as often as possible!

Lucky you came across this thread, eh, KABurnett? In fact, how did you come across it?

And what problem was it that Mavis managed to solve so marvellously?

LOL. It's so funny when companies register just to post a glowing review as a response. Noone talks like that - it''s so obviously fake. Thanks for making me laugh though. Desperate for bookings?

OP, did you mention in your letter that you were going to post your review on the web?

It's nice you can't be bothered using the shift key, except on the spa name and treatment names. It's also lovely that you can spell Thalassotherapy.
