Sorry, and in answer to your question, the due date they have given me is 11th May, although DS was 2 weeks late and then induced, so I'm just hoping this one will be more punctual. :)

I read that if you measure from the top of your pelvic bone (I'm sure that's not the right word for it) to the top of where your bump feels solid, the number of centimetres should be the same as the number of weeks pregnant. So me and hubby got a tape measure out yesterday, and I measure 22 cm, which is exactly right, as I'm 22 weeks pregnant.

Although I've got quite a big bump now, I've only put on a couple of pounds - is that normal? The baby is growing normally and everything else is fine, so I presume it's not a problem, but my midwife hasn't weighed me, so should I mention it, or just be grateful?!

    Wow, what a clear picture.

You're right about the measurements Snaggles- my bump measures 36 cm at the moment which is spot-on- you should be within 2 cm of your weeks.

Lucky you- I've put on 2 and a half stone... it's scary. Most of it is on my tummy though so I'm not TOO worried at this stage. No one has weighed me yet and the only comment the midwife has made is that my weight is all baby -it can't be but it was nice of her to say it!

Wow, you must be a little nervous for the birth then:eek:

Hi there, now re weight gain in pregnancy, yes you're right, we only weigh women at the booking visit in order to establish BMI as one of the factors for risk calculation ( ie for consultant or midwife-led care).
From then on we don't weigh regularly any more as research has shown that it doesn't really mean very much.
Frequently, the little thin ones put on hardly anything & go on to have good size babies, whereas the larger ones often gain loads & end up with tiny babies.
The old adage for weight gain in pregnancy was ( showing my age here  ) 1lb per month in the 1st 20 weeks and 1lb per week in the last 20 - an average of 25lbs which is usually about right.
Excess weight gain can be a sign of gestational diabetes and you would prob be offered a glucose tolerance test if they were concerned about this.

Now re the tape measure - you are correct in the 1" for 1 week rule, but we don't worry too much if it's a bit over except maybe if it was a lot and accompanied by excessive weight gain.
It's if it's under we get more concerned - called IUGR (Intra Uterine Growth Retardation) used to be small for dates.
This can indicate a problem with foetal development, placental function etc and you would be offered further tests and referral to the consultant.

again sorry for the long post, but I think most pregnant ladies just luurve reading about pregnancy & babies;) :rotfl: ;)

Yes, you're right, I love reading anything at all relating to pregnancy and babies, even if it's not relevant to me (spent about 15 minutes reading an article on twins the other day).

Thanks for the info about weight gain and measurements, it's fantastic having a real live midwife on here!! And please don't worry about post length, have you seen the length of some of mine!?!? At least yours are interesting and informative, unlike my endless waffling about morning sickness. :)

Mrs Sparkle - I'm sure your midwife is right, if it's all on your tummy, it sounds as though it will come back off after the birth. Sorry to ask a personal question but are you planning on breast feeding? (you don't have to answer if you don't want to). I think breast feeding helped me lose the weight last time - I remember if I didn't eat plenty, I felt faint and dizzy, so my body must have been using a lot of extra calories during the early weeks.

That's just reminded me actually, I went really dizzy in Toys R Us the other day - just suddenly felt disorientated (hadn't had any breakfast as was feeling queasy) and my legs went wobbly (hubby caught me, bless him!). The lady in the store was lovely to me, sat me down, brought me a drink of water, offered to take me through to the offices for a lie down etc - I must remember to write to her manager to pass on my thanks.

i have 3 siblings and the gaps from me are 5, 10 and 12 years and we are all close so was a good gap even though my own 2 are just over 2 years apart!!
  • re breast feeding - i think it burns off about 500 cals a day which didn't help me because i ate about 3000 extra :rotfl:

Just found this post and read it with interest as i am expecting my first on 21 april.
I have just joined the boots parenting club and also noticed they have a 50% online only sale on of some baby stuff - might be a good time to stock up?
As far as DFW is going for me, we are getting so much stuff given, people just want rid because it is taking all the space up in their house! Otherwise, people are selling us stuff very cheap.
Maternity jeans on ebay - brand new, were only £5 and they are DP ones!
Bye fir now and hope pregnancy is treating you well.

The pregnancy is treating me pretty well now, thanks, but unfortunately my Grandma is extremely ill at the moment, which is very upsetting. She's in her 90's, an amazing lady who has been battling cancer for the last couple of years. She has always been the life and soul of the family, patient, kind, loves all her Grandchildren, and especially her Great-Grandson (my 6 year old son).

I'm really heartbroken to see her so poorly, she doesn't seem to have long left at all, and it's terrible to watch her trying to cope with the pain with such incredible dignity and bravery. She sat holding my hand, hardly conscious, for about an hour this afternoon, although did open her eyes, smile and say a few words when DS popped in for 10 minutes (hubby took him to the park for most of the afternoon so I could spend some time with her).

I love her to bits, I just don't know what I will do without her.

Hi again, sorry about my rather unhappy post yesterday, but something positive did come out of all the heartache - we've decided on a name for the baby, which my Gran loved - Natasha Grace.

Hubby had suggested the name at the scan (he just looked at the blurred images on the screen and the name popped into his head), and when we saw the happy look on my Gran's face when we told her, we knew we had found our little girl's name.
