Hi, I did a few of these steps, downloaded avast and the program to stop all the programs running at start-up.

I seem to have an issue with avast though, my memory on PC is shrinking, whereas last week it was 87% I am now down to 83%, I thought avast was supposed to take up less room, and not eat at my memory?

I don't see it can be anything else. I CClean and Defraggle several times a week, keep only a few logs for avast and malwarebytes, and I haven't a single document or program on my PC that I don't need. Everytime I uninstall something I search many times for fragments. I downloaded a new version of Amazon MP3 downloader and 15 MP3 tracks in that time, that's it.

Yesterday it was at 84% and today it's dropped again to 83%. Nothing was downloaded in that time, nothing done except normal usage. Is there anyway to stop this? It seems to be limited to my PC and not netbook (although as I download alot onto i player on netbook I can't always tell, but I don't think it's happening there).

Following an online tip I have set the maximum avast scan log size to 256kb.

If it is avast then I am really peed off! I am at a complete loss and would appreciate some help, I want to keep avast as I am very happy with it in all other areas and don't want the hassle of finding another product (as I am sure not going back to avg!)

ram is different to disk space, but avast isn't bloated in either areas.

everything uses disk space, avast, mp3's, windows updates, so you need to find out what it using how much with this.

    http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/windirstat_portable

defraggle wont increase disk space, or performance

Thanks, I just ran spacesniffer and found a huge 1.9gb file called pagefile.sys, more googling followed and I moved it from C drive to the E Drive (which only had 3% used). C drive is back to 86% which I am happy with. Just bad timing made me thought it was avast I guess.

Would it also be safe to decrease the amount of space the file can use or should I leave it alone now? As assuming it will eat away on the space on E (which is fine really since not much on there). I got the jist of the function for that file but am far from an expert.

the pagefile shouldn't grow much or at all, and will shrink back automatically if it does grow, so leave it as it is - it's used when the machine runs out of ram.

if you have other partitions, you could just move some data there, video's, mp3's are likely candidates, and create a link to the e: drive on your desktop for easy access.

Thanks for the tips but all files/mp3s etc already live on the E Drive and get saved there :)
  • All seems a bit confused? In simple terms: Memory is in a number of places the two places you are talking about are Ram which is fast memory chips inserted into your computer and hard disk which is a much slower device. When your computer is running the processor is continually using the RAM and everything on the RAM is only temporarily there. Windows watches the RAM and when it sees fit it moves stuff off it into a temporary location on the hard disc which shows up as pagefile.sys. How this affects your speed is basically if your RAM is small and you do things that make it necessary for Windows to keep moving stuff back and forth from RAM to pagefile then that slows it down. So for hard disc if you have enough space to expand the pagefile and it is all continuous on the disc you will not slow down ie if you check the fragmentation of your disc and it has a continuous space of 3 gig then you won't slow down. So if you have a say 25gig disc then you don't need to bother till it is 85% full (ie till you are down to 15% left).
As for the RAM if you run lots of programs and services and stuff in the background Windows will move stuff that has not been used recently off the RAM to pagefile (this takes process time). If the stuff that runs keeps chipping in to what you are doing (you may not be aware of it) then Windows has to bring it back off pagefile and that's what slows you down. ie say you are typing a document Windows keeps it in the RAM. Then you move to photos they come into RAM. Then the virus monitor is in there and lots of other stuff. After a while Windows moves the document to pagefile, starts to move some of the photo editing program and some of the document editing program. You move back to the document and go for say spell check but this feature is on pagefile now so you have to wait till Windows finishes moving the photos moves some more to make space on the RAM then fetches back the spell check dictionary. What you experience is a delay and see the hard disc working. The more that goes back and forth the more the delay and the more you do to make it unnecessary the faster your computer runs.

Well, I am still having disapearing space on C. Back down to 84% and I just can't figure it out. Obviously pagefile.sys wasn't the culprit since it is still occuring and E remains at 95% which is the figure after I moved the file there a few weeks ago.

I downloaded the program recommended and found lots of old program info to delete, which took me back to 85%. But again would not explain the disapearing space.

Avast and Maleware Bytes not finding anything.

I think I will just give up trying to find the cause and just keep an eye on the % of free space.

Something has just occured to me, there is another user on the PC and she doesn't always remember to delete her temp internet files (she's not a heavy user like me though! And whereas I keep 10 days history and cookies, she has those deleted as well, I have a clean out every now and then). Would that explain it? I have set it to delete on closing IE now for her, will wait and see.

Or would the fact I only delete cookies periodically account for the space being eaten? Although Netbook is treated the same, I don't notice space dissapearing there, but as previously said I download alot onto iplayer on netbook so harder to tell.

Well anyway this is clearly beyond my capability to solve so best left alone, annoying as it is!
