Burn one (or more copies) of important data to DVD - imgburn can do this if you need some simple software to burn dvd's. Test that you can read this data afterwards.

Choose and install some free disk imaging software, install it, use it to backup the whole hard disk to an external usb drive, create a boot cd from the disk imaging software. If your system didn't come with a windows cd, create one from the software that comes with the machine - eg acer erecovery.

Then if anything goes wrong, you have the means to reinstall windows, at least one backup of data on DVD, and at least one full disk image on external drive - so two possible methods of restoring everything should hard disk fail, or windows gets corrupt.

It's not a good idea to move data to external drives or dvd's, because this isn't a backup - if you move it, you've still only got one copy, and if that move operation fails, or the usb hard disk/dvd fails, everything is lost. It's quite common for people to move all important data to an external drive in the belief that it will speedup a machine (highly unlikely), and then find the external usb drive fails at some point in the future. Similarly flash media is easily corrupted/lost - useful for transporting data, but not the best place for backups.

disk imaging software will make a backup of everything, windows, programs and data, all settings as they were at the time of backup.

We have another email account i use for non family and friends and i have had it since setting up the computer years ago , i use it daily ie..facebook etc.., its letting me access it and send emails but i am not receiving new 1s, it says it said i needed to log in my user name and password, and it wasnt recognising it and i know its the right 1. then if i cancel it it comes up as an error message,
i opened another email account but thats now comming up as error message 0x800ccc90 800ccc18, ive done several system restores, no luck,
hope some1 can help me

Current state of play -
Despite trying to obey instructions and advice given, and a further run of tangosoft, nothing opens from desktop.
Instead, come large and small msgs. both conveying Not Found.
1] Large one asks if I'd like windows to find how/where it was created and re-do. When I opt for this, nothing happens.
2]Shorter msg reads:[with X inside a red circle]'Unable to find locale[yes, it does have an 'e' on the end]data files. Please reinstall.

Despite closed's warning that defrag may worsen matters, I feel like opting for a previous date. if only to retrieve my wokring computer in a form I recognise and can use, although it had become painfully slow.

My bbc i-player ?, which developed into this techie issue is not long and it would make more sense if it was read first.

For any help, I would be hugely grateful[before heading to Dentist at high noon]
