CCleaner can do this if there is a lot of old carp on the machine...it just takes time to wade through it especially if it's a few years old and has never been cleaned out in it's life.....

3 hours is excessive, I'd run chkdsk c: /F and post the results of step one in a new thread.

After a period of time watching my computer apparently busy but refusing to communicate with me once again. When it finally did I asked Google "what,s my computer doing" It came up with some free software entitled "what,s my computer doing"

I installed it and to my surprise it worked. Now at any time I know exactly what my computer is doing and if it is working on something I consider to be a waste of time I can un-install/disable or remove it.

Now I'm going to try look for some software that tells me "Which program added back a start up task I just removed?"

I know this makes a frequent appearance, probably because it is so well liked, and although it is mainly a security tool I find it has helped me to speed up my old PC as well. So forgive me mentioning it again - Winpatrol free (google for it) by BillP is a way to see virtually everything that is set to run and makes it a very easy way to experiment with stuff.
Also when you have decided that there is something you want to really get rid of. Rather than use the windows un-installer which I think on occasion does not do a full clean up try Advanced Uninstaller free. (also easily found by google search) (Sorry to be lazy and not include the direct hyperlinks)
