NITS - Apply Tesco's Value Mayonnaise from roots to tip - leave no hair unturned! Wrap a few layers of clingfilm around head, leave for a few hours and wash out. Repeat a week later. Bingo - no nits! This has worked for my family 3/4 times now and we are currently nit-free.

LOL mayonaise works? unbelievable!! Well I got 2 nitty gritty combs today on prescription, one for each of my girls.
We spent about 30 minutes combing and removed all nits along with their eggs. I got the life cycle printout mentioned elsewhere in the forum and have embarked on the removal plan.
Hopefully they too will be nit free very soon.

i've never seen a completely frozen whole tomato. It was a bit like a tomato golf ball. Could probably have played a round before it burst, they were that solid.

I'm a bit late to the party... (Saw this thread recommended in this weeks email - and am still working my way through the hundreds of posts)... but I cant go on without having a rant about this frozen tomato thing!

Tomatos should never be stored in the fridge, EVER! Most supermarket tomatos are imported from Holland to look nice, be the right shape and have no imperfections... Not for flavour. And its our fault, because for some reason we brits wont buy odd shaped or ugly looking tomatos (If anyone has any thoughts on why this is, I'd love to hear it). Anyway, storing tomatos in the fridge destroys what little taste they do have in them, so it should be avoided at all costs. Keep your toms in a veggie basket, fruit basket, store cupboard or other suitable place out of the fridge and they will taste better - promise!

Back on topic - All the best Triker, I'm 32 and have been in debt all my adult life... Infact being in debt is a way of life for me. But hopefully not for much longer. Changed habbits, this site and some good fortune should put in the clear before the year is out. Hoorah!

** Just re-read this, god I'm boring. I seem to have skipped turning into my parents and have gone straight to my great grandmother instead.

Hmmm I have always put my tomatoes in the fridge also, but wont anymore. Just thought it would keep em fresh that bit longer, but more flavour would be nice so its the vedgie basket from now on !
  • I am a health visitor- we are able to prescribe bug busting kits which consist of various nit combs (narrow and wide toothed) and a cape, all free of charge. We can also prescribe lotion to hopefully kill those little bliters! Kindest method is wet combing with conditioner as the lice are becoming resistent to the lotions.
Hope this saves you some money- just ask your health visitor!
  • Oh I feel for you all! When my DD was young nits were a constant for about 5 or 6 years. We tried everything but it was the old conditioner and comb every other day that did it. After junior school it disappeared.there is light at the end of the tunnel!

  • Hello Triker, I think your situation is appalling, regarding the nits. There's obviously a child in your daughter's class whose family is not being properly treated, but there's nothing the school can do. If you are at your wit's end, I would tell her teacher that your daughter will wear a fresh bandana all day, every day, for health reasons. And don't worry if they fuss - just get it in black, or whatever goes with the uniform. Legally, there's actually nothing they can do about it. She can wear it for PE too - this is never a problem in schools with lots of Muslim girls, provided there's no flappy bits. I'm a teacher, and I'm sure you have every right to do this.
  • don't know if it helps but my GP offers a government run FREE intro to the local health centre. 3 months membership FREE under the title of ACTIVA.he says its a once in a lifetime offer but i have had 3 memberships so far.it hasn't helped my weight but i definitely feel better..........hoorah for free floating endorphines!!!!!!!

    Hi Triker,

I'm also overweight, and it get's me down more than anyone around me knows. I've been overweight most of my life, and managed a brief few years at a size 12/14, which only helped to attract an alcoholic husband, so I'm not sure there are benefits to weight loss really!

The only person who tells me to lose weight is the nurse at the GP every 12 weeks when I go for my Depo jab, and yesterday when I went she told me I'm also affecting my bone density by having the jab, so now I've got being a fat cripple to look forward to!!

Do you want to tackle your weight now? Will you feel better starting to deal with it? More important, are you at all motivated to deal with it? From next week (kids back at school) I'm going to commit to get fit, and lose weight. I turn 40 at the end of the year, I don't want to look like a complete moose in any photos, which is how I seem to look sat on the London Eye in pics we got a couple of weeks ago! Do you want a weight loss buddy? If so, PM me and we'll give it a shot.

Up until this year I had massive debts, helped along by my now deceased husband. You mention having a house to organise selling in your OP - get it organised ASAP, it was my salvation (although me & 4 kids now live in a rabbit hutch). I can also recommend advertising it yourself on one of the internet sites. It costs £99, but it saved me £6k in fees when I actually sold it (despite being on 4 estate agents' books), and gave me more scope for negotiation on price to secure the sale. I put all my own pics online, and you can edit it whenever you like. Hope I'm not flouting any rules by saying I used https://www.mypropertyforsale.co.uk.

When you get round to doing your SOA, the guys on here will help you to stream line your outgoings, although be prepared to be told to lose some luxuries too, if you have any - like Sky TV, etc., but they will advise you on how to switch suppliers, negotiate, to get better deals.

As for the nits? My 2 youngest sons had them on and off for 3 years, only nit free in the summer hols. The conditioner and comb was the best treatment - I did it daily after their bath while they sat on me and watched TV (distracts them). They're only nit-free now because I moved them to another primary school, which I'm sorry to say does have a better class of parent & kids, who obviously DO treat nits when they occur, as infestation of whole classes simply doesn't happen at this school. Drastic action, but it's been a great move on all levels, and the kids are happy having friends from both schools still.

Didn't the recent hospital admission put it all into perspective once again though? Everything else we have control over to change, but health is something we shouldn't take for granted, either our's or our family's. A friend of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. She was 36 with 2 young kids, but it doesn't discriminate. My 12 yr old found a lump earlier this year, just when I was thinking we were starting to get ourselves back on track. I'd have taken back the £161k of debt, gained 10st in weight and had nits for life if it could ensure he was going to be OK. We were lucky, it was a cyst.

So, this long message is to show that we're all right there behind you, willing to help where we can, and confident it can all turn out just fine. Now, where's my lo-cal-alcohol-free beer?
