It's still a great read, no gossip just nice heartwarming stories. My 28 year old daughter always asks for it be brought out to Spain when anyone visits her.0

my mil sometimes has this - the stories make me laugh - not even so much as a chaste kiss goes on between the couples, i dont think S E X exists in people friend land'We're not here for a long time, we're here for a good time0

I have a tea set my late MIL won in a competion in Peoples Friend many years ago, its 6 cups, saucers and plates, each one showing a different clan tartan.

"Such lovely tales" said my great-aunt about the PF, "and suitable to read on Sundays" ...and there's nothing wrong with that.
Another childhood PF reader here, but only when in GA's house as one Nana read My Weekly & Woman's Own, the other Nana had Woman & Woman's Realm which I remember as rather dreary.
My mother would sniff & deny any interest as she was devout Family Circle (I really miss that!) then read the hand-ons cover to cover.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
Isn't is strange how folk really seem to like it and yet all you see on the t.v. or in the newsagents are the 'gossip mags'maybe its air of 'faded gentility' of days that are no longer around, is what give it such an appeal to many people. No one gets up to much mischief in the stories and they don't run off with other folks husbands, and women seem to behave better.I can't imagine 'Morag' or 'Elspeth' getting legless, throwing up or getting 'heaven forfend, with child' at least not without a strong silent outdoor type called Rory or Stuart to wrap her in his stong arms and look after her:)
Do you know I think I could write something for the mag meself at this rate:D:rotfl:Sometimes I think there is far too much reality in the media ,perhaps we all want a bit of escapism to cheer us all up;)0 -

I remember the Friendship Book too, my gran loved it. It reminds me that she always referred to her People's Friend and Woman's Weekly magazines as 'books'. It always used to confuse me.0

I don't think they are QUITE the same thing, but I'm sure they come from the same publishing house. Very similar 'target market'.
There used to be another (could still be around) called 'The Fireside Book' by David Hope.
Who knows, maybe Frances Gay and David Hope are one and the same person.

The Peoples Friend reminds me of my Great Aunt who used to get it every week. I used to love the watercolour pictures on the front and some of the articles on the inside were very readable when I was a 10 year old girl.
Haven't looked at it in years tho!0
