i love it. it is an amazing magazine. but i've never bought it.

my mil mum's buys it, then she sends them to my mil who then gives them to me. so when get them they may be 4 or 5 months late but i don't mind. they are a really enjoyable read. i keep them all. then after about 2 years i go through my mag's and just keep what i need.
i also read the easy cook mag. i've got this on subscribtion and i love it also.

I really like this mag and am considering a subscription. I made the Pan-yan pickle recipe from the September edition and it's really nice in sandwiches, etc. I like the magazine because it's 'proper cooking', not the sort of fancy menus which look pretty but you'd be starving hungry again an hour later! Also, I like the foraging aspect as they often give you recipes for stuff you can find in the wild.

  • Great to know that others remember this wonderful little magazine. Does anyone happen to have a nice recipe that appeared in the 1970's for a frozen trifle - I think it might have included raspberries and may have been issued around Christmastime. This is an old recipe that I have mislaid and would be really grateful if anyone remembers this one and can help me.

Does anyone have old copies of the Home and Freezer Digest magazines printed in the early 70's. In particular May 1977. I have lost favourite recipe for Apricot shortcake

I have been PM'd with a request to post a recipe from the 100 best apple recipes - am I allowed to post a recipe from the book on here or not?

I remember my mum getting this magazine. Apparently its still in print and has recipes and knitting projects which are do-able. A real blast from the past. Is it worth getting,do you think, for the projects and recipes?

My German mother subscribed to that magazine for over 60 years. It was a regular in our house wherever we lived, along with the Sunday Post, and I seem to remember it had some cosy stories in it usually featuring characters called Moira and Fergus striding across the glens in their tweeds and woolly sweaters as well as recipes and knitting patterns. Hoots mon!

My granny in Scotland used to get this in the 50s and I assumed it wasn't around anymore.

I have to admit to buying their 'Summer Special' every year while on holiday - in Scotland naturally ;).

I just love the 'gentleness' of everything in it - all very 'good, homespun stuff'.

Still have some knitting patterns from when I used to buy it in 70's/80's.

A little story for you - One of my elderly ladies, always had it delivered every week without fail. She would pass it to me when I visited her and I would play a little game with her - showing her various pictures and saying 'Been there, been there - oooooh haven't been there YET!'. Sadly, she passed away and I went to the paper shop to cancel her order. The newsagent said, 'Oh I've got this week's here - just take it and give it to one of the other ladies instead.' I shoved it in my bag and went home.

That evening, I remembered the magazine, took it out of my bag and on the front page there was a mention of an article - Willie Shand in Glen Nevis, which is exactly where we stay in Scotland. One of the illustrations inside the magazine was taken from the side of Ben Nevis looking down on the caravans that we stay in - that would have been the biggest ever 'BEEN THERE!'. It was like a parting gift from Mary - and I cried absolute buckets.
