Thanks for that o-t-e
I've just been browsing on the net and have seen aol anytime dial up. It offers a 1 month free trial and no contract, is there anything stopping me getting that and cancelling it after 2 weeks when I get my broadband in and therefore paying nothing for my dial-up access during that time? Seems too good to be true tbh.
I've just seen that quidco offer £10 cash back too for this, surely I can't get paid for my dial-up......can I?

Hi Joey - the month free trial with AOL is a good idea - I'd look into how to do it while installing as little AOL software as possible though. I have used that in the past, and even had the free trial extended by a further month when I said I wanted to cancel, but the one thing you couldn't do with AOL is have your e-mail program dial-up a connection, search for e-mails then disconnect - when I cancelled I had to go through a ten minute conversation with their retentions team in which they were saying that I didn't need a separate e-mail program as I could use their software and me repeatedly saying I simply did not want to use their software, I just wanted an internet connection - but in the end no problem cancelling.0

I use Hotmail for all my emails so the Aol software wouldn't cause a problem... would it? I will try to just install the necessary and see how I get on
Thanks

Sometimes people say that installing AOL causes them problems with their pc. I've never experienced it myself, but would suggest that you create a 'sytem restore point' in case of any problems.0

i have a problem
i use virginmedia phone and i want to use any other dial up service
tesco dial up and most other needs to have BT line (i dont have)
so now i tried connect4free.co.uk service and connction was ok, so why otrher providers dont like NTL phone lines?0 -
this is because you are paying per minute (pay as you go) ... other providers don't mind if you use a Virgin Media (NTL) phone line for pay as you go... its just that unmetered dial-up and broadband services will not work on a Virgin Media phone line0

Dear all, my friend's quite elderly mother would like to get connected.
She would ideally like something which is not tied into a contract so it looks like dial-up would be the best route to go. However, she would be most likely to be surfing during the day, which is peak-time and so quite expensive, most of the ones we've found are around 4p per minute which will work out to be quite expensive in the long run.
Does anyone know of any flat-rate dial-up access which is around 1p a minute, or can anyone recommend any internet providers who will do Broadband without being tied into a 12/18 month contract?
Thanks, Caroline

plenty of isps offering 1 month contracts (vivaciti, adsl24, falconnet, idnet etc) from about £16/month with a decent service, but none that i know of will offer free activation or modem, so this will add another £80 or so to the cost (fast4 do include a free modem, but their service has a very bad reputation)
i'm pretty sure i read somewhere that there's a dialup isp that gives a 01xxx number that you can save money with by dialling a prefix, but i don't know who or how, my dialup days are long behind me, hopefully never to returnUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0
