I've moved this to the motoring board for you where it should get more responses.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

We could turn this into a discussion on speed limits. Wide open road can have a limit which is too low, while a built up area with lots of children running round can have a limit which is too high.

A good driver should know the difference. Unfortunately, there are far too many bad drivers out there who don't!

BTW - that's NOT an accusation emeralbungle. Sorry you got caught, we've all speeded at some point, but so far I haven't been caught..... so I can't get sanctamonious about it!

Do not speed. Also buy a camera detector.

I got nicked last year. 3 points and £60. I bought a Snooper S2 straight away.

Best money I ever spent. It's kerbed my speed as i'm always concious of it going red rather than blue.

I got caught during the 2 year probation. For months after I was paranoid to hell and back that I might get caught again. 6 points in 2 years = license being revoked!

I think the sheer paranoia and the addition of the Snooper S2 just drilled it in to me not to speed. Now I rarely break the limits and am always alert of what is going on.

In a way it's a good thing I got nicked as it made me a safer driver. My S2 is always on in the car now, couldn't do without it.

Unfortunately you will be without your car for a while after I crash in to you when you brake for no reason on a clear road...
    I think....

The camera or laser/radar gun has to calibrated properly in order for the police to be able to prosecute.

If you are doing 20 to 39mph in a 40mph zone and the camera goes off, you won't get fine/points.

I don't get why people go so slow through a GATSO, like I said above, if it's incorrectly calibrated, you cannot be prosecuted.

If you get caught by a laser/radar gun and it is possible for you to stop and confront the policeman/woman. Do so and ask for their name and the details of the equiptment and for them to prove to you that it is calibrated correctly.

Obviously only do the above if you KNOW 110% you were NOT speeding!! :)

The cameras you have to watch out for are the SPECS cameras.

So many times I see people shoot past these and they haven't a breeze that in 14 days they'll have a NIP letter in the post.

These are the white cameras, one facing to you, one facing the other way. As you approach the camera, it takes a pic of your car/numberplate and stores it in memory. As you pass by the camera facing away takes another shot and essentially starts a timer.

Example: You'll see SPECS cameras a lot on the M11/M25 where they have roadworks and an 'Average Speed Check' sign every few meters.

The camera will then measure the time you took to get from one camera to the next. Most of the time the average/roadworks ones are set to 40mph. If you go over 40mph at any point between the 1st camera, the next camera, the third camera and so on until the end of the SPECS zone, the computer in the camera sends the images direct down the wire to your local nick or the DVLA, I forget whom. It will then connect to a computer at head office and automatically print out a NIP letter.

The amount of people I see speed up and slow down between them not realizing they are being measure the whole time is astounding. The government is issuing more of the SPECS cameras and in permanent places too, so watch out!

Thankfully my Snooper S2 picks up on these cameras and has saved my bacon on numerous occasions! Especially useful when i'm driving to Heathrow, Stansted or Gatwick for my flight at 3am and I can't see the SPECS camera zone coz the signs have been moved since my last trip!!!

    These are SPECS cameras.

The official blurb (although a bit out of date), to go with what I wrote above is:

    SPECS System
Speed Violation Detection Deterrent, SVDD is the digital brain which the SPECS system is based upon, it uses state of the art video system with Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) digital technology. Consisting of two video cameras each fitted with infra red illuminators, giving the ability to work 24hrs 7days a week.

SPECS are fitted either at the roadside or central reservation a set distance apart to create a speed controlled zone, or where appropriate, groups of cameras can be linked to create a speed controlled network. Mounted to a single or doubled armed distinctive blue SPECS column, they are linked together via computer.

As vehicles pass between the entry and exit camera points their number plates are digitally recorded, whether speeding or not. Then, by ANPR recognition, the images on the video of matching number plates are paired up, and because each image carries a date and time stamp, the computer can then work out your average speed between the cameras, and then will make a decision if the preset speed threshold is triggered. This data is then digitally stored on a central computer, so that there is no need for film to be collected and changed at the cameras site.
Pictured above; a SPECS system sited on one side of the road, used to enforce speed in both directions.

SPECS is currently in use in permanent sites in Nottingham, Gloucester and Northamptonshire and in temporary locations in Cheshire, Kent, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.

  • Why can't the UK government do what they do in Dubai and sponsor the camera? :D

I was in Dubai in June and those beige cameras that don't have sponsors wrapped around them are bloody hard to spot!!!!!

Thanks Wyndham, you are right the road was a new road and not built up at all, it had fields on either side. However, it was a 30mph limit, so I got done.
Also, they were stopping probably every third driver...reckon they made a fortune that day!
