I've used a mix of compost and some rotted down manure I bought for the garden :) They seemed to like it last year so fingers crossed for this year lol

I started mine off a couple of days ago in seed compost. What variety have you planted if they are to be kept in the kitchen? What height will they grow to?

I'd never thought of growing them. Do they have to stay indoors or do you plant them out later?

Just done a bit of research on the sutton seeds web site:

    http://www.suttons.co.uk/ProductList.aspx?h1=S-VEG&h2=

Some of the varieties on here are for a sheltered patio or a greenhouse and grow up to 18". If you don't mind a plant this size in your window then go for it. Problem is that those seeds cost £3 for 6 seeds. One of the varieties grows to 100cm...too big for my kitchen window! ;-)

Last year I had a different variety (apache) to the ones I have this year (which are a mixed bunch) but I found just nipping out the top shoots not only helped it bush out but also stopped it getting unmanagable in the height department :) Once the weather gets better then most varieties will cope fine outdoors though :)

Kept mine outside last year with no problems apart from my other half moaning about all the food being HOT!!!
  • I've still got three plants from last year in my conservatory, now up to my shoulders, don't know what variety, my friend gave me the seeds!
  • What went wrong with my jalapenos? It seems to be growing fine though.
Plus do ornamental chillis grow slower than non-ornamental?

I'm not a great expert but I think that's just damage to the leaves rather than a disease, possibly water drops on the leaves and the strong sunshine if they're on a sunny windowsill - I'm assuming you're growing in the house. THe next new leaves coming through look perfect so I'm sure your plants will be fine.
The ones you buy from commercial growers are from huge greenhouses where they control everything including the light with shading and lights so they always look perfect in the garden centres, if you think about it our houses are less than perfect, try sitting next to the window with the sun belting in - roasting - and then at night with the curtains drawn it's pretty cold on the sill.
Just call me Nodwah the thread killer
  • I'm growing them in a light box btw.

I thought it was the water drop trick also.

My cat will NOT be getting ANY treats for the foreseeable future! Came down this morning to find that not only had he managed to get the clingfilm off the trough I planted my seeds in- she also thought she'd dig most of them up!
So nearly all my little seedlings are dead!
Thankfully I still have some seeds but I am SO annoyed at her! I had a germination rate of high 90% and I was sooo happy!

Now goodness knows how many of them will survive despite being carefully rescued and replanted :'(

I know exactly how you feel.
Last year my cat got into the 4 shelved plastic greenhouse and scuppered the lot. 12 trays in all with lovely little seedlings of beetroot, spring onions, lettuce, tomatoes etc.It scared her that much that she legs it up the garden if she sees me moving it.
I salvaged what I could and planted them on into some of those little plug pots and most of them survived. Good luck.
