Don't over water and don't let them dry out :) I think they're one of the easiest things to grow indoors and had a huge crop from plants in my kitchen windowsill :)

Try a few variations instead of just one - makes a great display and they dry beautifully

  • They like a very sunny spot and grow like weeds. If you are planning on keeping it inside then the plant will go for years.

I had one for 3 years that was like a medium shrub. But in the end I had to get rid of it as it was taking over the front room.

I used seeds from chilli peppers I bought at the supermarket.

Can I butt in with what may be a stupid question:o
The only thing I have ever grown is sunflowers each yr with my girls and I always plant the seeds and put them in the airing cupboard for a while to sprout (don't know why I do this must have heard it somewhere!)
I brought some chilli seeds this morn - do I need to do the same with these or do I just put them on a windowsill or what?
I'm so embarrassed by my ignorance but if I don't ask I'll never know.:o

Put them somewhere warm to sprout & keep them well watered, should take 1-2 weeks, then transplant them. Use a fairly big pot (at least 6", as others have said, they grow fast).

All mine seem to produce very hot fruits, last years where too hot to use

I grew Chili and Cayenne in cold frames in Scotland, It's not hard to grow and it is worth it to get your own fresh ones.

When I grew mine I just put them in a pot with a freezer bag on to act like a cold frame, placed on a saucer on the sunnyist windowsill in the house. Watered well, worked like a charm. In fact so many germinated I gave a load away.

Thats how I started growing mine. Just save the seeds out of one and off you go.

I have also grown sweet peppers from shop bought taste the difference long red pointed peppers.

My dad has tried growing melons from the shop bought ones in his green house. Vines started to grow but think he started to late last year so he will try again this year.

To be honest if it has a seed or pip its worth a go.
What have you got to loose

Is it ok to start growing them now? The seed packet says Feb but I'm so eager to get started and it's only a couple of weeks away!
  • I have a chilli / pepper plant that I bought from Homebase and I'm not sure if the peppers on the plant are edible. How can I find out?

Apart from that I will save my chilli seeds and try growing from scratch :)
