  • My understanding is that all chilli peppers are edible.
  • There was a lbel on the pot which said that the plant was not edible which is why I wondered?
  • Maybe homebase used some kind of chemical while growing the plant that made the chillis non-edible?

Is it ok to start growing them now? The seed packet says Feb but I'm so eager to get started and it's only a couple of weeks away!

I couldn't wait either. Planted mine 2 weeks ago. Already 2" tall.

Glad to hear that Annie as I planted them yesterday!
  • I have a chilli / pepper plant that I bought from Homebase and I'm not sure if the peppers on the plant are edible. How can I find out?

Apart from that I will save my chilli seeds and try growing from scratch :)

I read some where ( cant remember where) that some are ornemental because they don't taste very nice and some because as king monkey said they have been sprayed.

    try http://www.g6csy.net/chile/database.html
This site has an a-z datadase. If you still have the tag for your plant it should have the name on it and you may find out more about it here.

    hope that helps.

When growing from scratch then these sites may help.

    info on growing.

try google but you will need to put in uk chili plants or uk chile plants or uk chilli plants. as alot of sites are for USA conditions.
  • Forgot to say that as chilis are same family as tomatoes, so if you need to feed them when the chilis are setting tomato feed would probably work well.

watch out for white fly and green fly they are a pain.

    And good luck.

These are Ornamental Chili (Capsicum Annum) and whilst not dangerous, they are extremly hot.

The stores do spray them with retardation chemicals and polish to make them all nice and shiny so people buy them, which is why they carry the warning stickers. However you can grow them from seed, which would negate the chemical problems.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

Me neither!! I planted mine last week and they're just beginning to sprout.
It's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

    Advice needed!
I planted 6 chilli seeds in an egg box, they are in my airing cupboard also covered with a freezer bag and 3 of them have sprouted yesterday:D Obviously I need to wait for the others to sprout. My question is - how big should they be for me to take them out of the airing cupboard and place on a windowsill? Do they need light as soon as they appear? I do have a really sunny windowsill but of course it's quite cold at the moment. Also once they are on the windowsill how long before I plant them into their own pots or will that be obvious because they'll be so big?
    Please excuse my ignorance!
