    Advice needed!
My question is - how big should they be for me to take them out of the airing cupboard and place on a windowsill? Do they need light as soon as they appear? I do have a really sunny windowsill but of course it's quite cold at the moment.

I've put mine under light as soon as I saw green. Temperature isn't as important once the seedling have started growing, they just grow slower.

Also once they are on the windowsill how long before I plant them into their own pots or will that be obvious because they'll be so big?

There are no hard and fast rules but I'm going to pot mine after 2 true leaves develop.

I have also planted mine in egg boxes but I don't think I will do it again because it absorbed the water and started to go moldy a bit.

Thanks Kingmonkey, but as only 3 out of 6 have sprouted so far should I still put the whole thing on the windowsill? Will the other ones sprout that way? I suppose I could cut their individual pots off and just put them on windowsill.
  • Are the seeds different varieties?

You could cut individual pots I guess.

I think you can leave them in the cupboard until the leaves just start to open.
  • Im gonna give this a try aswell :) there's alot of varieties to choose from on ebay if you search for "chilli seeds"

    What types are others growing?
  • Im growing:
    Nosegay
    Marbles
    Jalapeno
    Cayenne

I would have a look at online chilli seed shops to search for varieties that you fancy.

Last year I grew my own melt the plastic hot chilli's and I'm going to try and grow the seeds from them this year :) With any luck I might even get some to grow lol - Apache I think they were called - good crops and very hot chilli's mean you don't need many plants unless you want to kill your tastebuds for the whole year :)

I love chilli plants, as well as the fruits :) As they always cheer me up in the kitchen... They are so abundant in their fruiting and I just love that and all the fab colours of the various stages of ripening are great especially in the morning when I get up :) So mine have now been sown and are in the kitchen window sill and with any luck I should have about 15-20 plants so enough to share around too :)

What kind of growing medium do you use.....plain old garden soil or compost?

I've used a mix of compost and some rotted down manure I bought for the garden :) They seemed to like it last year so fingers crossed for this year lol

  • I'd never thought of growing them. Do they have to stay indoors or do you plant them out later?
