In that case don't jump yet. Give yourself some time to plan and fund your next move properly.

Find out where you stand legally and financially.

Work out how much debt you are personally responsible for.

Think about where you and your child will be best supported - do you have family nearby or a strong support network? Is your child's father likely to want to be heavily involved (spending 2 months away might suggest that he's not)?

Do a list of pros and cons about every major decision you have to make, it'll help you see what your priorities have to be.

Sorry I have been otherwise engaged on another board today. you have done marvellously well, and should be very proud of your strength today in dealing with all these things. Have a bath and relax (I won't suggest drinking as that could be a slippery slope), paint your nails or something, and see what tomorrow brings. As Daenna said, we are here if you need support or to sound off.

    Hi Tall Blondie,
Because you said you have 93 days to move out and because he has gone to Canada for 3 months am I right in thinking that you are living in Military Married Quarters?

If so - as one person said, don't voluntarily leave as you'll end up voluntarily homeless, stay for as long as possible. I think that you can go to the Cotswold family centre (not a great place from what I've heard from a friend) for a while until you get a council house. But, places are what you make of them - so chin up, paint a smile on your face tomorrow and don't let this idiot get to you - easy to say, hard to do, but give it a go.

    Best of luck

Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • Would i have to stay the full 93 days? What if i was to leave before the 93 days but go into private rent, would i still receive help with the housing benefit that way?

Just don't jump out of the frying pan into the fire by making your decisions too quickly. Find out where you stand and make informed choices.

  • Housing benefit is dependent on your income only so u will get that if u are on benefits up to the limit set by the size of your family and your income. If you are put on income support, all your rent will be paid up to the limit set for your family size. However private rentals can be higher than the limit, so watch for that. If u work, u will only get a proportion of your rent paid depending on your income (I hope that makes sense).

Whether u are deeemed as making yourself voluntarily homeless will only be important if u wish to apply for council house. Council houses are harder to get, will only be let to people who are judged as not having made themselves intentionally homeless, may not be in a 'nice' area (altho it may be) but as long as u pay the rent (and aren't antisocial which I think is unlikely), its yours for as long as u want it. Its as close as u can get to owning your own home without actually owning it. They are often cheaper too which may not bother someone on benefits but will if u want to work. However, u could have to spend some time in a hostel before u get one, even if they accept cause as u are aware, council housing is in short supply. It should be perfectly possible for u to get one tho.

Bear in mind that while the occasional person can live in a rented property for years, this is often not the case. Rentals can be of shorter duration (the landlord may decide to sell the property) and if u aren't working it may be difficult to find a rental for someone if on benefits (altho there are also land lords who don't mind renting to benefit dependant tenants and who do rent long term - see the top sections of this site - pick your landlord).

I hope this helps with some of the confusion. I live in a very nice council house in Wolverhampton. I moved there from a hostel in London because it was easier to get a property here. That was my way of dealing with the problem. I did spend some months in a hostel in London beforehand.
  • Today has been a productive day i've:

Got the ball rolling about income support, have to have a meeting on weds with i/d etc then it goes from there.

Changed the child tax credit to a single person instead of joint.

Got my name on the housing bidding system, they just need my i/d.

Spoke to the homeless prevention officer and he's said i'd be entitled to £448 towards rent a month. would i also get help towards council tax?

So now i can either rent private, or wait the 28 days for my housing bidding application to take affect (i would also have to wait in this house longer if what the above have said is right, so i ain't intentionally homeless, but i am going to clarify this tomorrow)

So i have a question the money i get now will be income support and child benefit and that is to cover:

    all utility bills
    house/pet insurance
    car insurance
    food
    clothing
    petrol
    debts

    Am i going to manage???

I don't know about benefits at all I'm afraid. I think though that you can claim tax credits too, and if you are waiting for them to come through you might get a loan (Crisis loan?) from the DWP. Was he very helpful then? What about the money advise service I linked to, did you contact them for advice?

Edit to add yes, you will be eligible for Council Tax Benefit.

    YES!!!!! You'll be fine.

How can I tell? Because you're here asking and taking advice. Get thee to the Old Style board for help on cooking economically, and the Grabbit for knock down prices. Debt Free Wannabe will help you get your debts under control. There is no such thing as a stupid question but watch out for the odd stupid answer LOL
