What is selfishness though skintscottishgirl and it is always a bad thing? Look at it this way -
Surrogates aside, every single person who has children does so for entirely selfish reasons........and if you don't believe me - name one single unselfish reason for having kids! There aren't any! Love is selfish, the human gene is necessarily selfish.......
Yes, alcoholism is a selfish illness and problem drinking CAN be - as are all addictions - but they are afflictions and are not meant to harm others. i believe that selfishness is only bad if it actively harms others, if it means that you gain while another loses - that's what selfishness is all about.
Going back to the kids thing - I've heard childless people called selfish - in what way does someone not having kids take away from anyone else? None. In what way do I, as a childless person, benefit at the expense of others? None!
So, whilst I agree that, when i drank and interacted with other people and was harmful to them, I was being selfish. Mostly though, I drank alone and didn't interact with anyone so the only person I was harming was myself. That isn't selfishness.
Colleagues - why is what your colleagues want more important than what you want? F them! lol
To answer your question - NO that is not the whole problem at all.
Let's look at it another way...for 20 years of my life I wanted to die. I absolutely hated life and I wanted out of it. Now, had I killed myself, people would have said "how selfish!", "what about her family/friends/colleagues!?" and "she shouldn't have done that!!!" In other words, everyone believed I should have stayed alive FOR OTHER PEOPLE! I should have suffered, day after day, week after week and year after year - just so other people could feel okay!!! Who is being selfish there? Me, wanting to die, or the people who insisted I should stay alive, in a life I did not want, so that other people ( including the people who abused me and made me want to die in the first place!) wouldn't suffer?
As far as excessive drinking is concerned, to be honest, the needs or wants of others are not that important because we cannot stop drinking for others. We can only do so when WE chose to for ourselves, for our own reasons. So selfishness doesn't come into it. UNLESS you are so concerned about living your life for others that you would choose to stop drinking alcohol purely for their benefit.
    Would you?

I completely agree with most of what you wrote there. :T Sorry about your suicidal feelings.:( I can identify with that.

Also alcoholism is a illness so to label it "selfish" doesn't really make sense. I think alcoholics can maybe be more self involved like the people that suffer from the illness of anorexia, it makes you concentrate fully on yourself but it isn't "selfishness" in my opinion.

I know someone that very judgementally labelled all drug addicts and alcoholics as "selfish" That might be how they appear to someone who doesn't understand the power of addiction.

(However the person in question smoked loads of fags everyday and ate lots of fatty fried foods/ meat and she ended up with a heart attack but I'm sure no one called her "selfish" for having that illness.

    Evening everyone!

Not getting involved in the English Patriotism debate! I'm a very patriotic person but feel when applied to football sometimes its slightly skewed. Ho hum.....

Anyway....Not AF tonight, but was one of the nights I do allow myself a drink. Work on a friday is always a fun affair, all the drivers are chirpy and happy and we all have a good laugh. Puts me in a good mood for the weekend.

Off to dish up me dinner....catch up later

That's because only English football hooligans have been on the rampage in other European countries! Welsh and Scots fans never did! You reap what you sow, I'm afraid.
