On very long car journeys the seat which isn't in use is usually full of luggage so we put luggage in the front passenger seat and whoever isn't driving sits in the back (which also has more leg room as the front passenger seat has to be quite far forward to accomodate Alice's car seat). There isn't really a need to keep handing her books/toys though as with being rear facing there isn't a massive footwell for everything to fall into and we just put coats/blankets dstartegically so she can have the books/topys accessible without holding onto them all the time. On shorter journeys (up to an hour and a half) she doesn't necessarily have a passenger present anyway. A front seat passenger could do all those things you mentioned (and occasionally does) but it isn't something which needs to be done that often. If I was on my own and needed to do those things I would stop although I have almost never needed to. Until it broke from over use she did have one of those buggy buddy books hanging down from the handle near the ceiling so she did always have something to occupy her even if she dropped her car toy and by the time that broke, she was old enough for us to say tough luck if she dropped her things.susan thanks for the linkie to your blog
Can I ask a few questions? (you know me!)
With Alice not facing you when you look round, have you managed to find any creative ways to keep checking in with her on long journeys? Or has it all been much easier now she can talk?
I'm tempted to go rear facing again after reading that info, but wondering how I'd hold fergie's hand, give him water, check temperature, hand him dummy or toy etc...
That's interesting. Do you have any links to information about this? I ask because this graph implies that they (or at least Sweden) don't/doesn't. (Although admittedly someone could have invented the figures.)Those european countries that rear face till 4 years generally have a higher accident/fatality rate due to weather conditions and the like.
It's frightening how blase some people are about it. I have a friend who's husband attched the car seat base using both the side seat belt and middle seat belt because he was just guessing and another friend bought hers based on which one looked the nicest. I also read about a lady who was using a rear facing infant seat but forward facing because she'd bought it second hand and didn't have any instructions. I wouldn't say that everyone needs to or should spend as much time researching as me though. I think the legal minimum standards should be higher so that parents don't need to research as I think the existence of legal standards is probably one reason why a lot of people don't.Susan - thanks for the link to your blog, I love that you have such an intrest. I only wish I could say the same for alot of parents. We get so many folks who come intowork and really dont care they just buy cos they know the laws says they have too. They do no research and are usually more fussed by how it looks than its safety!!! Worse still its usually people with money that are the worse!!Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.2 Samuel 12:23 Romans 8:28 Psalm 30:5

hi Tara, I'd only popped away for a bit!
Stooooooooooopid me forgot had done 2 loads of washing before I had my shower (disgusting I know, shower at half 12!) and the immersion was practically cold so that woke me up temporarily!
Whats a good daytime telly channel to doze to (if I can get Tom to doze off after his feed!)?0 -
I may sound really stupid here but how does a rear facing car seat work with a 2/3/4 year old? Where does their legs go!!0

No idea about TV, isn't that Doctors programme on in a mo. Erin grumbled getting in the shower this morning, nearly had to drag her in. TV crew was at the school so no way she was going in looking a mess. Was so funny to see all the kids 'playing' hit in front of the camera in the playground, particularily my daughter! Me and my friend scooted across hopefully while they were off, at least they had better have been.Too many children, too little time!!!

Their legs hang off the end of their seat as it isn't right up against the back of the regular car seat the way the baby one is. Alice actually has more leg room than I can - she can sit with her legs strecthed right out in front of her resting on the back of the regular car seat. I'll see if I can get some photos as it'll make more sense than my explanation.Buttonmoons wrote: »I may sound really stupid here but how does a rear facing car seat work with a 2/3/4 year old?
