I always wanted to be a vet. Now... I have no idea, biomedical is like a little bit of everything healthcare sciences wise, so it's the easy option (as in, easy that I don't have to pick a specific area).

SM, have you any idea what you would like to do, if someone said to you right now 'Hey you, I can cram your head full of a degree's worth of stuff right now, what you going to pick?' what would you say?

question ... ever since realising im going to be 25 this year its really got me thinking .. what am i doing with my life? (believe been on a emotional roller coast for a while now just been keeping it in) ... they always say by 25 you're ready to think about family .. well i have my family and if i never have a 3rd child id be ok with that .. but my career or lack of one has left me feeling sort of lost .. so my question is when did you decide on your careers and at what age?
First I did a four year chemistry degree because I didn't know what I wanted to do and I liked Science and thought it would be a good area to get a job in. (About 2/3 of the people on my course then went on to do a PhD because they still didn't really know whatthey wanted to do.) After graduating (so age 22) I decided I wanted to be a special needs teacher. It was actually something I had thought about for a long time before then but it was only at that point that I felt sure about it. Because of timing I worked for two years before doing a Primary PGCE but never managed to actually get a job before I had Alice. (And now I have a different view on women working full time outside of the home so I won't be going back to it in the future.)

Actually orignally I wanted to do dietetics but my parents wouldn't let me because apparently a dietician wouldn't earn enough and since at that point I was dependent on them I had no choice. (But in retrospect it would have been a bad choice for me at that time anyway for other reasons.)

And there's a long rambling anwser which probably doesn't actually tell you anything useful but never mind.

Oh dear! :o Good job I'm driving and not drinking!
Can he sneak me out so I don't have to queue in all the traffic at the end? :rotfl:

I'm absolutely certains that he isn't open to bribes! :p
It'll be the first time he's on proper hours, rather than student hours. They're working 11-7 on all three days, but have been told to expect overtime - probably getting the rabble out of Chester. Look out for the good looking one who's helmet looks too big for him! :rotfl:

sm, just an idea but as philip is so good with kids, would he not consider doing childcare or similar

I was going to suggest the same. There is a massive shortage of males in early years/primary childcare. They'd probably snap him up.

SM I'm 30+ ish :p and I think I know what to do, I still need a kick up the backside to do something about it.
I left school at 16 and drifted into secretarial college on a YTS, because my Mum said if I wasn't working/at college I had to find somewhere else to live for free!
I got my first job at 17 from a college placement who decided to keep me on. I continued in admin type jobs up until January when I took a break to do my favorite job which i'm doing now! :D
I'm due back to be a dull civil servant in January 2014 and i'm determined i'll have done something about it by then - so i'm looking to start my 'career' at past 40!

  • I am sure there is a thread on here somewhere about Brabantia bins. Will have a look in a sec.
I bought some much coveted complete set of Meyer pans in their last sale :o Which pans are you hankering for ?

I am delighted to report that my order did go through and a beautiful set of Jamie Oliver Professional Series Pans have been dispatched to me :T:T

With some clever code usage I got them for £99 - usual price £235 in Debenhams, have never seen them below £160 :money:

    oh and before I go

I saw a lurvely Yellow Patterned Stokke today and had a proper gawp at it! Must have looked a right weirdo! :rotfl:

You get used to it when you have a Stokke - everywhere you go there are people gawping and talking about it!!

I saw a red one the other week (in my lunch hour) and even I had a good old stare!! I felt like shouting 'I've got one of those at home!!!'

So Susan is the Chemist... *makes mental note for when stupid chemistry stuff is hurting my head*

    :D Hi... :D
  • Evening! My little man has taken an age to get to bed tonight. Second night in his own room- last night went well and he slept the longest he has slept in weeks, but he is a right PITA to get to go down.
question ... ever since realising im going to be 25 this year its really got me thinking .. what am i doing with my life? Ummm, I think for a lot of people (ie. me) it's not as clear cut as that. I did a History degree at uni (because I love history and had no particular desire for any other subject), worked part time in a bank to fund myself and ended up on the very covetted graduate programme with said bank when I finished uni. I worked there for three years after graduating, learnt a massive amount, had some awesome opportunities and met some lovely people. However after three years I realised what I had always known- I'm not cut out to work in a bank, doing a boring number crunching job. I could do it, but it bored me. So I took a £10k pay cut, and got my current job as a store manager at Starbucks. I love, love, love my current job. My remit is very diverse so I have less chance to get bored, but I couldn't honestly say I plan to do this for the rest of my life. I make a point of putting myself 'out there' to take on extra responsibility, learn new things etc as who knows what doors that may open. So I guess that at age 27 I love my job, I can't wait to go back part time after ML, but I haven't stopped looking for my next challenge or next opportunity.

Conversely my OH didn't join the police until he was 27, he now absolutely loves his job and by all accounts is very good at it. However he isn't necessarily ambitious in the same way I am, and would be happy to stay where he is for a fair while yet.

How old is Phillip? The reason I ask is that I volunteer with the Prince's Trust (see what I mean about getting out there) and they have some awesome training and support schemes for under 25s not in education or employment. If Phillip is under 25 then I definitely recommend that he finds out more about the PT in your area. I've seen what they can do for young people, and some of the success stories are just incredible. Also I was watching something on Breakfast news last weekend about a drive to get more men into childcare, so maybe Phillip could get in on some of that action.

sm, i'm 25 and i still don't really know what my "career" will be! However, i do think i have fallen into my ideal industry (public sector), so i suppose that's a step in the right direction. I'm not hugely passionate about work, to be honest, it's more a means to an end for me. I did my degrees for their own sake rather than any career aspirations. Sorry, that's prolly not too helpful except to say it's ok not to know where u want to go and you may never know until u fall into it!

And FWIW, my dh is 26 and been in the same career for 8 yrs, but now wishes he could get into something else...but no degree nor the money to get one means he's a bit stuck, so "knowing" from an early age isn't everything.

would like to win a holiday, please!!

In my experience working with children there is a real shortage of men.
