3 sorry I was cryptic! LOL at world war 10!
I think the thing is that I'm not always sure what things will be controversial when we discuss then and which things won't, and I hate feeling ever like my views have offended anyone, IYSWIM?
In a nutshell, my main struggle with the research hypothesis, is that it seems to be defensive. Do the forceps cause the autism or does the autism cause the forceps to be used, is the question begged by the correlation.
As a medic, it seems quite convenient and defensive to level the 'fault' at the child, rather than at the medical intervention.
I also struggle a bit with the research on autism generally since it seems to move from 'cause' to 'fault' in a way that other things don't seem to.
Historically this has been a huge pain to mothers of children with autism.
Leo Kanner talked about 'the refrigerator environment' in the 1960's suggesting that the parents of autistic children somehow provided an (emotionally) cold environment.
This seems to be a way of expressing 'fault' rather than cause, and is damaging.
Thankfully Kanner towards the end of his career attended a national autism conference and publically recanted his view.
I read one mum's account of how 'at that moment (her) life came back'.
I'll stop now and I hope I haven't caused any controversy/offence

Weezl Thank you.
I think out of all of on here, you are the most unlikely to cause offence to anyone! :A
I'm always questioning in my mind whether J being autistic affected the way he was born, or did the way he was born make him autistic?!?
Does research into autism flit between 'cause' and 'fault' because, in reality, nobody knows (yet)? Also there are so many degrees of autism it's totally baffling?
Things I read/hear about autism don't upset me as a Mum - maybe I have a very thick skin. I think that the researchers are as confused as me, but one day, someone will make a breakthrough and find a definate cause.
My Nana (the one who lacks tact) must have heard about the 'refrigerator environment' as she suggested I hadn't interacted with J enough when he was a baby, and i'd gone back to work full time when he was too young.
But I have another two perfectly 'normal' children who i've brought up exactly the same. ***Confused smiley***
Back to happy things;
My baby daughter is very proud of walking now, and is walking too and from the bathroom, bringing me things from the under-sink cupboard.:beer:0 -

Got an e-mail from my boss this morning asking me to call her when I have time to discuss my flexible working request. I thought "oh oh, doesn't sound good". So gave her a call and she said she is finding it difficult to accommodate me and doesn't think she can. She has explained the reasons to HR and they can understand why.
So, they have come up with another job for me which sounds sooooo much more interesting as I hate my job!!!! It's a new department which is being set up and it's under the scrutiny of the government ministers because of where I work, so all equipment is brand new, and the guy who is heading up the dept is happy to accommodate my chosen hours/days. She has sent me the draft of the job description and it sounds great. Still managing staff, but only 4 this time, with opportunities for development.
It will be the same money as it's the same grade, but my own job was getting very stressful and I needed a new challenge and new experience so sounds like I'm on to a winner. Oooooh, I'm all excited.
If I don't fancy it, she will look again at the options and see if they can come up with something else so I can return to my own job, but I don't want to!!!! To not return to it would be a dream come true!

yeeeeeees, and I think our joint part of our usernames may explain why it's probably only you and me who are quite so excited by that Jillie;)
Probably only you two and the whole of Glasgow! I went to see Chicago in Glasgow and the audience went absolutely mental when he came on as Billy Flynn! Apart from me because I am far too reserved lol. He was actually really good and it was a good atmosphere, but apparently us Glaswegians really love one of our own!0 -

grrrrr at nana's comment 3!
and I completely agree that if it was the environment a mum provides then all the children in each family would be on the autistic spectrum which isn't true
I know enough about you to know you are a very warm and relational mummy :A
My friends little boy is autistic (IQ 64) and his was the most straightforward vaginal birth of all her 3 with only an 8 minute pushing stage.
The difficulty with looking at birth stories and then at the children, is that it misses the families where the data is the other way round IYSWIM?
