What did you all do for Christenings/Baptisms/Naming ceremonies...in terms of afterwards? Did you go home, invite everyone back home, book a venue, have a party at a pub, lay on kiddie entertainment etc, etc,

For DS1 and DD we hired a private room in a nearby pub for a meal. It was OK but a bit impersonal. For Edward we had everyone back to our house and did a buffet, which was less hassle than I thought it was going to be and much nicer I thought.

I think my issue is that I don't know whether I should be worried or not, because I don't know what's normal!

She seemed to think he should have comprehension of things like 'we're going out now!' or like you said 'where are your shoes?' neither of which I think mean anything to him.

I think he understands 'can you clap?' and 'can you wave?' because he does those whenever we say it. But everything else seems a bit flukey really, like he's just guessing until he gets the response that shows he's got it right (us smiling, clapping, saying 'good boy!')

So, he is picking up on the words 'clap' and 'wave' ..

he says 'yeah' and daddy. He doesn't seem to get that daddy is DH and says it frequently for no reason she was suggesting. She said 'so he uses it of any man'. My response was 'well no, he'd be just as likely to say it to an envelope or his raisins.'

It is VERY common that children even as ancient as 5 or 6 will use 'daddy' to mean any man,

She then said, 'I expect he's just developing his gross motor skills, so will be further on with walking than his peers'. Well this is troubling too, as he can't walk, and his RL friends can, and V, seth, benjamin, Erin, Kai are all further on than him in walking by a long shot.

Mine walked at about 14-16 months. My nephew was 2.5.

So in short :o I have no idea whether to be worried or not, as I have no knowledge of wjhat's normal.

I know I get frightened reading about what other children can do, but maybe all mums have that?

    xxx

He is just fine.. and enjoying being little.. they are little for such a shrt time I always think it is a huge shame when they start talking and walking and being 'grown up'

Oooh i have a perfect excuse to wriggle out of the Brat basbysitting here... I've just had a text "hi thanks for getting Brat tomorrow really appreciate it, i can take DS on Fri if you're free?"

Well... we're not free, we have Beavers. And i don't really want to mention Beavers in case she joins him up ().

Can anyone tell me how to word it so i'm basically saying i can't do it, don't want to be tied into it every week... Without being arsey and still keeping things friendly?! Or is it not possible? :(

'Tomorrow is fine but I can't do next week.. and We have plans for Friday so maybe you could get him for me one day next week?'

I had everyone back to mine after 2 of them.. which I hated as I had to do all the cleaning up before they came.. and after they left!! The others I booked a function room and had catering done. My friend made cakes for a couple fo them, the others I had them made.

hello! a little update from weezl

I managed to speak to a SALT, and said I wasn't sure whether I should be concerned or not. They asked me if I wanted to self refer, but I wasn't sure. She asked a few questions and said that he does sound delayed :(

But she gave me loads of things I could do, I'll list them in case anyone is interested:

1)simplify my language, 'not 'where's the ball?' or 'Oh ball gone!' but just ball.
    2) repetition. Say it absolutely loads of times 20-30 times in a single exchange, even if you feel daft.
3)start with the sounds things make, like 'woof' or 'miaow' cos that makes sense, rather than the word 'dog' why dog, could just as well be called 'table'
    4) offer choices so he has to give some kind of output, ie not just give a drink when he makes an 'i'm thirsty' noise, but hold up milk and juice so he has to announce his need in some way.

You're probably all clever mummies who've thought of all this naturally, but I thought I'd post in case you're like me.

Anyhow, I need to try it for 4-8 weeks and then get back to them if he doesn't seem to pick up.

Bit sad now, but have strategies, so that's good isn't it? :)

    :hello:Jonathan 'Fergie' Fergus William, born 05/03/09, 7lb 4.4oz:hello:

  • That's a positive step forward Weezl. I think Nicki's point hit home for me earlier...if there is a possibility that there is something 'wrong' (for want of a better word) then why not get it checked if someone is offering to refer you.

And very helpful for her to give tips too.

FWIW when I am practicing words with Benjamin (we chat in the car on the way to/from the CM) I always start with the words or noises that he is good at/likes first.

So he used to like bump best - so I would shout 'BUMP' and either Benjamin would join in or I would say 'Say BUMP!!' until he got the idea and then I whoop and clap him for being clever. We do bump a few times and then move on to 'BALL' or whatever.

I am a very clappy, cheer-ey, Yay-ing kind of mummy so lots of noise works for us!

He won't say bump anymore!! So we start with kissing noises (and actions) instead :)

I never offer choices though - my greedy boy would choose both :rotfl: Will have to work on that one.

Sami I went and weighed William on weds and that was the first time since Apr  didnt think people were bothered so much with 2nd one... how often have you been going?

Weezl - I agree with MFD that it sounds a positive step and good basic things to start...
