I'm not very good at the maths side of all this, so sorry if I'm being daft here.

My understanding (please tell me if I'm wrong) is that a 4 star p & p is for reasonable costs. 5 star is for extremely reasonable or something similar. So, if someone was to mark you a 4 star, they're still very happy with your p & p.

Wouldn't that easily get you a 4 star rating, yet everyone's still happy?

I'm sorry but 4.5 would put me off buying from you unless you were the only seller of that item.

If I am buying an item, I would judge the P&P based on the price they were charging, not on the ratings. It's pretty easy to see if you are being ripped off or not.

Exactly! 4.5 out of 5 is hardly bad.

The seller dashboard is very important, I have been worrying about the fact that it almost seems to be ignored and only feedback concentrated by a lot of us users. I know many regulars here are bored by me constantly urging people to watch their expanded dashboards.

You can call reports up and see where the real weakness is and even narrow it down to categories and countries and it might be worth a look.

I did see the reports thingy earlier so will go and have a play with it.

Is there any areas that you could suggest improvements I can make ? Or is it just simply a buyer's perception of an auction and costs as suggested by theonlywayisup ?

    Therein lies the problem.

4.5 by Ebay standards is BELOW average. Try telling the buyers that. Most think that 3 is average.

IMHO it is the buyers perception. The buyer puts the stars. Some think 3 is average, some realise (sellers mostly) that 3 is well below average.

On a scale of 1-5, how good is £1 postage charged on £1.50 postage paid. For me a 5. For some a 4, others a 3 but still some will mark 2 and 1.
  • Those who have been on ebay a while may remember that when they first brought in the ratings the scores were not 1,2,3,4,5 but actually broken down into 0.1 so just between 4 and 5 there were 9 scores and this is where my 4.5 probably comes from rather than people rating me at 2 or 3 or 4.

At the end of the day, a seller on ebay has to give better customer service than any other retailer around as we get hit the hardest for the slightest little complaint.

Yes, I was definitely under that impression too, that 3 was average.

I have had a 1 in the past month, but I honestly believe it was from a buyer that I'd started a npb for. Item was paid as near to the end of that as possible, and I sent it that day. P & P was 79p....

I do think that's also another big flaw in ebays thinking, I've had quite a few initial non payers that pay after npb via ebay is started, and they can do horrid stars just to horrid, and just because they can.

I'm not an ebay knocker. I looooove ebay, it would costs me a flippin' fortune to set up a shop (I only sell low cost clothing, often at 99p), and my potential customers would be next to none compared to what I've got on ebay.

I do expect to pay all the fees, the paypal fees too I believe are fairly reasonable (3 star maybe...!) compared to having a card reader in a shop.

But I wish ebay would start liking the seller a little more again and sort out the one or two glitches that make it harder to use.

I can see why Ebay is like it is with sellers. It is easier to scam as a seller than a buyer (imho). So the rules were made. However, like most things Ebay 'brings in' it is flawed. But I really think, sometimes it is easier to 'go with it' and work it to your advantage than to fight it. I talk as a business seller (titanium ps) and I put my stars down as much to 'cosmetic advertising' as I do to customer appreciation. :rotfl:

I too am a business seller, have been for 10 years or so now, hmrc have always known about me. Don't think I'll ever become a power seller though, I don't sell enough as ebay is only my second source of income, but I'm self-employed and do sell on ebay for a profit (well that's the idea anyway!), so I don't think it's fair to pretend to be a private seller. I could probably "get away with it" even with the new rules on business selling, but I don't wish to.

Do wish they'd abolish those stars though...
