I would like to nominate the charity Get A-head http://www.getahead.org.uk/
The charity helps those who suffer from head and neck cancer and their carers. The charity helps fund not only equipment but research and training for nurses in the field.
I do have a bias towards the charity after my Mum suffered with a very rare form of the disease (she's something like 180th case in the world and the 4th patient ever to suffer with the disease on her nose) and they were so helpful.
Get A-head have provided support for my family through literature and people to talk to. Post surgery they also provided mum with alternative mediciens such as reflexology and acupuncture to help her body and mind get over the drastic treatment she had (she now has no nose! its such a strange site!)
They are a small charity based at the Birmingham University NHS hospital leading the way in the treatment of head and neck cancer.0 -
I would like to nominate the Manchester new chidrens hospital appeal.
https://www.newchildrenshospitalappeal.org.uk
The New Children's Hospital Appeal, appropriately spearheaded by Bob The Builder aims to raise £20 million to support projects within the new hospital and will provide:
*The latest equipment for diagnosis and treatment
*A place for parents to stay when their child is in hospital
The appeal will ensure that when it opens in 2009, Manchester and the North West’s new children’s hospital will be the very best it can be
If anyone wants to help raise money for the new hospital then please take a look at the website. You could even take part in Bob the Builder's Big Pyjama Day on Friday 29th September 2006.
""On Friday 29th September Bob the Builder will be leaving his familiar tool belt and hard hat at home and heading off to ‘fix it’ in his pyjamas!
He is challenging children and grown ups everywhere to join him for Bob’s Big Pyjama Day to help raise funds for the appeal.
You can support Bob’s Big Pyjama Day in school, at work or when you’re out having fun.
By making a donation to spend Bob’s Big Pyjama Day in your pyjamas you can help the new hospital be the very best it can be.""

I would like to nominate
https://www.sense.org.uk
for their help with deafblind children and adults, a cause close to my heart.0 -
I would like to nominate the charity CLAPA
http://www.clapa.com/
This charity offers invaluable help and advice to parents whose children are born with cleft palate and cleft lips.
My nephew was born with a cleft palate and was unable to feed properly. Through support and advice from CLAPA, he was provided with special soft feeding bottles which could be gently squeezed as he didn't have the suction to feed properly himself. They do wonderful work at a very distressing time for new parents who discover their child with this condition. They have played a huge part in my nephews life - especially after surgery, helping him to make sounds properly, so that he can be reasonably understood.0 -
I would like to nominate the National Assocation for Crohns & Colitis - https://www.nacc.org.uk
Crohns/Colitis are two forms of IBD. They are very dehabilitating and are becoming more common especially amongst teens and people in their early 20's.
I am 24 and have had Crohns for 9 years. I cant work because of it and because of a lack of knowledge about this disease many people dont understand why as i look seemingly okay. Many people with Crohns have to adjust their lifestyle around it. The stomach pain, weight loss, joint ache, loss of energy can be so extreme. Often people with Crohns end up having 2-3 operations in their life time. I cant express how strongly i feel that the NACC should be a benefactor of the MSE's goodwill.
The NACC provide much needed to support to 30'000 members across the UK. They support friends, families and carers of people with Crohns, run a support phoneline, advise with benefit claims (the government does not seem to see Crohns as a disability!!?), they run a welfare fund to help with people struggling with money, donate to local hospitals lacking in resources and they fund research which is vital as the cause of Crohns is still unknown. They rely on donations and i urge you all to consider them seriously, every little would mean a whole lot to us.

I would like to nominate the Cats Protection League.
Every year they help to rehabilitate and rehome 60,000 unwanted, abandoned and abused cats and kittens. They never put a healthy cat to sleep just because it doesn't have a home.
Most MSE'ers have a furry friend, some a few furry fiends, but they are all loved and parts of our families. Not all cats have such an easy life, and sadly some of them barely have life at all.

I would like to nominate The Bone Cancer Research Trust.
It promotes research into the causes and treatment of Primary Bone Cancer, and in particular of Osteosarcoma and Ewing’s Sarcoma. Bone cancers have one of the lowest cancer survival rates. This is largely because there are virtually no funds available for research into detecting and treating bone cancers. What is worse, it is mostly children who are affected. Better detection and improved treatment will save more children.

Shelter offer help to make life that bit better for homeless people.
So many people, (through whatever reason) find themselves homeless. I have always found it heartbreaking to see a person homeless, and feel that everyone deserves the fundamental things in life such as a loving family, friends, and the guarantee that they will have food, water and comfort.0 -
I would like to nominate my friend who is trying to raise £20,000 for the National Deaf Children Society. He is profoundly deaf himself and communicate using sign language. He is currently training to trek in the North Pole and he will be the first deaf person to reach it.
Have a look at this website for more information. Please do not hesitate to donate via this website.

Hi Martin,
I'd like to nominate the charity Shelter because, although all us DFW Nerds are all in debt we all have a home. I cannot comprehend how difficult it would be without one and Shelter do a fantastic job.
I would also support National Debt Helpline but that was nominated above!
