We can nominate more than one, yes?

Because I'd also like to nominate Childline

    http://www.childline.org.uk/

Every day around 4,000 children call, but lack of funds means that only around 2,300 will get through to a counsellor.

A gift of only £3 will enable them to answer another call, and £38 enables them to counsel one more child.ChildLine receives no funding from the government. They rely almost entirely on people like you to pay for calls and to train the volunteer counsellors. This year they need to raise over £12 million just to maintain the free, 24-hour helpline at its current level. To meet their goal of answering every call from every child who needs us, they need all the help they can get.

Why? Because we need to take care of out future moneysavers. :)

I would like to nominate a small charity that helps thousands all over the UK for free.

    https://www.welfarerights.net

The above web site is a first on the internet and allows anyone with questions to ask or e-mail a specialist adviser for help and advice on benefit issues, debts, homelessness ect an ideal resource for anyone with internet access and especially for the disabled and housebound throughout the UK.

    Why?

Because they are unfunded and struggle to keep going.

National charity supporting younger stroke survivors since 1996.

In the UK stroke is a major killer, comparable with cancer , heart and respiratory diseases, and it is the largest single cause of severe disability.

Stroke is commonly seen as an affliction of old age, yet it frequently strikes people in the prime of life, often for no known reason. In the UK, each year over 10,000 people of working age have a stroke - nearly 200 every week. Over 1000 of these are under the age of thirty - 450 of them are children.

Different Strokes provides practical information packs, a regional network of exercise classes and/or swimming sessions, benefits and rights information, advice and info on education, training and work opportunities, newsletters to keep members in touch with each other, an interactive website, access to counselling services, and a helpline to ensure a prompt and practical response to the problems which confront stroke survivors and their families.

As a carrier of Group B Strep I'd like to nominate https://www.gbss.org.uk, I feel very fortunate to have two healthy children when I read of other peoples loss:

    http://www.bounty.com/Community/Discussion/TreeLeaves.asp?btySubID=3&btyOrder=1&btyCurrentPage=2&btythdid=436783&btypage=1

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infections in newborn babies in the UK - without preventative medicine, GBS infects around 700 babies each year of whom sadly 75 or more die and around 40 survivors are left with long term problems as a result. And yet most of these infections could be prevented.

Group B Strep Support (GBSS) is a UK charity, founded in 1996. Our 3 main aims are to:

Offer information and support to pregnant women and families affected by GBS.

Inform health professionals and individuals how most GBS infections in newborn babies can be prevented.

Generate continued support for research into preventing GBS infections.
Nevermind the dog, beware of the kids!
  • I just wanted to add the web address for Group B Strep Support. It is https://www.gbss.org.uk.

Group B streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infections in newborn babies in the UK. Without preventative medicine, GBS infects around 700 babies each year of whom sadly 75 or more die and around 40 survivors are left with long term problems as a result.
And yet most of these infections could be easily prevented if pregnant women were told about GBS and tested for it!

The charity desperately needs funding to campaign for routine information testing for this easily preventable infection.

Had I had this information in 2003 my 3 year old daughter would not have been left blind with severe cerebral palsy at 18 hours old by this easily preventable infection.

    Thanks

I would like to nominate Shelterbox: disaster relief (in a box) to wherever needed

    www.shelterbox.org

The Shelterbox project is based in Helston (of all places). Boxes contain shelter, bedding, light, heat, cooking aids and tools for ten people. They are distributed through Aid Agencies and Rotary Clubs closest to the disaster areas. The cost of a complete Shelterbox is £490. Boxes and new equipment are purchased as donations are received. All amounts are welcome and are used to purchase items toward a complete box. Best value is achieved by working closely with leading manufacturers, all items being obtained at less than trade prices! In the last week boxes have been sent to Lebanon, Somalia, Java and Equador. This is a very British initiative with a global impact, managed in a very cost-effective manner.
  • I would like to nominate all the air ambulances in Britain.

    eg: https://www.angliaone.org.uk

There are air ambulances all over the country which are funded by charity. Any one of them save lives on a regular basis, and the lives of all. You may never know when your life might depend on the outstanding work of the men and women of the service.

Life is sometimes a bit pants but occasionally you can wear your french knickers! :D
  • I nominate Dreamflight a charity that allows seriously ill and terminally ill children the chance to have a holiday of a lifetime. I feel, as a mum, we should do all we can to help our children and I feel a charity like this not only helps bring a smile to a very sick child, but if the child then dies, it gives parents a lasting memory and the knowledge that their beloved child had the chance to be carefree and enjoy something he/she might not have been able to otherwise.

They are a brilliant charity and have medical staff that volunteer their time to help these kiddies so deserve recognision.

You can see their work at
