I'd like to nominate 'Odyssey' which is a unique charity which enhances the quality of life for people with cancer through imaginative programmes of challenging and dramatic activities in the outdoors.
http://www.odyssey.org.uk/
Odyssey draws on the majesty of the environment and on art and music to help people with cancer combat the emotional and psychological devastation caused by the illness. It uses the stimulation of uncertainty and surprise to help participants aged 18 to 84 rebuild confidence and regain their zest for life. Odyssey helps them to move beyond a time of introspection and despair and regain a sense of control of the next stage of their lives. The idea is rooted in a great depth of experience of the use of the outdoors to help individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Time spent in the natural environment has a beneficial effect on people no matter what their background or experience. Odyssey believes that access should not be limited by financial considerations so sufficient funds are raised to enable the offering of all places at no cost to the participant. The Odyssey programme in its present form is five days long and currently runs five times per year.Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly!0 -
I would like to nominate two charities involved with animals and people.
1) National Animal Sanctury Support League (NASSL)
As the name suggested this charity was set up to support the people who run the rescue centres. Based in the North East of England is has unfortunately had to also take on rescue work and is very overstretched.
Website:- https://www.communigate.co.uk/ne/nassl
2) The Unicorn Centre
They are the North East branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association.
I think this poem from their website says it all:-
I saw a child who couldn't walk
Sit on a horse, laugh and talk.
Then ride it through a field of daisies
And yet he could not walk unaided.
I saw a child, no legs below,
Sit on a horse, and make it go
Through woods of green
And places he had never been
To sit and stare, except from a chair.
I saw a child who could only crawl,
Mount a horse and sit up tall.
Put it through degrees of paces
And laugh at the wonder in our faces.
I saw a child born into strife,
Take up and hold the reins of life
And that same child was heard to say,
"Thank God for showing me the way ....."

I would like to nominate
Home Start -
offering informal support to families with young children.
Their website - http://www.home-start.org.uk/about/
Families with young children face a lot of stresses - particularly in todays society where often extended families live far away. Homestart help to bridge that gap. As these families also often experience financial difficulties I believe it is an ideal charity for MSE to support.
Through their help and support I (and probably many others) have learnt how to better cope with and enjoy my family, how to have fun with little cost (their organised craft days for the children are excellent!) and much much more.
Kaz xJanuary '06 Grocery Challenge (4th - 31st) £320.Week 1 - £73.99 Week 2 £5.10 (so far)
Someone burst my bubble and I lost the plot so no idea what I spent now...Other Jan :- Petrol £20.41, Clothes £8.50, House £3.I will try to work it out.

https://www.alzheimers.org.uk is an organisation that helps and offers support tocarers and sufferers living with this debilitating illness.
You really can make a difference just by making a person realise that, just because they are in the twilight of their years, they're not forgotten.
This illness does not just affect older people....this is an example: A father, diagnosed with dementia who has a 16 year old son living at home.....Here is what the father told us:
'I feel sorry for him. He's young. He's having to come to terms with the fact that his dad is not going to get any better. He wants to see me as I was - not as I am. He copes - outwardly. I really don't know what is going on underneath.'
And when we spoke to his son, he said:
'Dad's not that bad yet. I haven't been offered any support. Mum's got lots of support. I would love to talk to someone by email or telephone, someone who's experienced. There are questions I need answered. I feel ignored. I think there is a lack of understanding about Alzheimer's disease. I was 15 when dad was diagnosed. No one told me anything. I found out myself through the internet. To start with I didn't tell anyone, but then I told my best friends at school. They've been great.'0 -
I would like to nominate Yorkhill Children's Foundation which is the registered charity for the Yorkhill Children's Hospital. In particular I would like the nomination go to the Schiehallion (Oncology) Ward which is for the children with cancer.
Yorkhill's aim is to help sick children by making their stay in hospital less distressing for them and their families, by funding medical equipment, research, and treatment facilities.
With more funding, they really can make a difference.
Thank you

I would like to nominate When you Wish upon a Star, who grant wishes to seriously ill children and their families. This charity makes the most special memories for children and their families, often memories which money can't buy, and certainly memories which parents often can't afford when they already are paying out to help their children, and often acting as full time carers.

I would like to nominate War Child
http://www.warchild.org.uk/
One and a half million children have been killed in armed conflicts throughout the world over the last ten years. Four million children have been disabled in these conflicts. Many millions more, themselves traumatised, have had their communities destroyed, or have been denied the opportunity to celebrate in full their childhood and prevented from developing the livelihood skills that they will need to live fulfilling lives as they grow.
War Child believes that children should never be the victims of armed conflict. For those children who become victims of armed conflict, War Child believes that their security and access to quality health, education and recreational facilities and services should still be a right and that, wherever possible, they should benefit from the love and care of their families and communities.
War Childs Mission
provide emergency relief to children and those people they depend upon in areas of armed conflict.
protect children who live in areas of armed conflict.
address the on-going consequences of conflict on children.
PLEASE GIVE THEM YOUR SUPPORT! See this link for example of their work http://www.warchild.org.uk/show_article.asp?ArticleType=Project&ArticleID=182
