Good suggestions re markets. I always buy my fruit and veg from the supermarket, which is not ideal as the quality is ok and the variety is fairly good, but I am sure that it is more expensive. Unfortunately it is difficult to get to any markets, unless I went at the weekend, due to where I work/ hours I work.

I think that I have been buying a few things like fry light and spices and low fat sauces which will last for ages, but have pushed up the shopping bill recently. I also realise that my boyfriend tends to pay for takeaways and that the bought sandwiches I treat as part of my spending money, rather than part of my grocery shop. So the grocery shop may be a bit higher, but overall, hopefully it is not. Thinking about it, should be at least 50p a day better off, even when buying cherries.

There don't seem to be so many BOGOF's on fruit and vegetables and all the reduced offers seem to be really good when I am trying to resist them!

Thanks for the KFC recipe - it looks yum.... and within my limited culinary cababilities!

I tried that thai curry recipe last week. Now don't let me put anyone off, as I am not a domestic goddess by any stretch of the imagination... but....

It was a lot of faffing about, and the end result was quite bland and not worth the effort, imo. Tbh for the sake of a few syns from my allowance, I'd rather use a pack of stir fry veggies and some decent curry paste, and end up with something that tastes more like the real thing. Just my view - I'll be interested to know what other people think.

There is schwartz thai red curry packet mix which is very nice and is about 6 syns for all the lot and makes enough for about 4 people so roughly 2 syns per portion. You need to have milk as you HEA that day or it is extra syns for milk...
very tasty though... Hmmmm, might have that for dinner :p

Barts does a really good thai curry paste - the green one is 1 syn per tbsp and you only need that much. The price to pay is the syns in coconut milk/creamed coconut but you can always halve it and use milk, yog or similar

Thanks for this Laura, I'll have a look for this at the weekend. I love Thai curry as does my OH so that sachet will probably only do the two of us:rotfl:

I read peeps over on minimins talking about using coconut essence (free) instead of coconut milk. No idea how it turned out, must remember to check it out soon and if I find it I'll post the link.

Brilliant, thanks for the Thai paste suggestions.. I will give them a go instead of faffing making my own. I like cooking but have to really be in the mood to go as far as wizzing up pastes etc. I think I'd be happy to spend a couple of syns on paste especially if it is nicer. I get scared of pastes and jar sauces as not all the ones I've had are IMO very nice so good to get some recommendations.

Re. shopping budgets I am lucky to have all an Asda, Tesco and Lidl practically on my doorstep and I pass a M&S and Sainsburys at least once a week as well. I'm very fussy with meat, I'll mostly buy the best quality one possible ie free range chicken, organic meat, usually from M&S or a butcher and to offset this cost I do mostly green days (at least 4 a week) and the rest a mixture of red/EE. Green days are so cheap to do even factoring in the cost of fresh fruit/veg and my shopping bill has actually reduced since I started doing SW. But as I say that is in part due to me doing mostly green and having the ability to shop around for the best offers.

I sometimes think how cheap my shopping bills would be if I didn't diet. Most of the BOGOFS and miltibuy offers seem to on pizzas, ready meals, yellow food, crisps, biscuits, choccies....You get the idea:rotfl:Not saying I want to eat like that but you can see how tempting it would be if money was tight and you wanted to feel like you were getting your moneys worth.
