Have just re-edited first page and title due to the latest info.
As software4students will only be selling Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, they are offering to upgrade anyone buying Office 2007 standard to 2010 Professional.
There is a £5 fee for the download and although microsoft will be offering the upgrade download for free via the early mentioned tech guarantee, they will only upgrade you to Office 2010 Home and Business. So this makes Software4students offer superior.

Purchase via the link on first post - top edit

    Hi bugeyed,

You talk of Office 2007 Standard being upgraded for £5 to the Professional version of 2010, but I bought Office 2007 Professional from software4students. Would the £5 download fee still apply? Seems a tad unfair if it does.

If I were to download the upgrade to 2010 from Microsoft, would that be the Professional version and free?

I agree the £5 fee is a bit cheeky - hence why I have added it to the edit. Admittedly, it would still have been a bargain and still is, but we all hate hidden extra costs. I think it is because they are offering to upgrade standard 2007 to pro 2010 and they are trying to recoup some of the cost. Those who bought the standard version are quids in.

You are still able to get the download for free from Microsoft when they actually put it online - I don't know why they are holding back, presume they want to get rid of all those copies of 2007 first and hope not all upgrade to 2010.

Please refer to my earlier post numbered 136 ( page 7 ) for instructions
The free microsoft download will be for the 2010 Professional as you qualify by purchasing the 2007 pro version. Those who bought the standard version should upgrade via the software for students site as they will need to pay the £5 but get a great value upgrade to the pro (via microsoft they are only entitled to the home and business 2010 version)

The decision by software4students to upgrade those who bought the 2007 standard version to 2010 professional is a great opportunity for those who bought the cheaper option.
This came about because software4students chose to only stock the professional 2010 version and therefore couldn't supply the entitlement of home and business upgrade for the standard version user.
I applaud them for doing this and obviously had they chosen to do this earlier, I would have posted it.
The fee for the download upgrade of £5 was always mentioned as a nominal fee. I personally think £5 is a bit steep (£1 or even £1.99 may have been reasonable to account for the fees incurred hosting a server to provide these downloads)
But at £8, for the physical disk, I think the £3 difference may well be worth it.
    So my personal recommendation is
If you want it cheap as possible, wait for the email from microsoft (see post 136 - page 7 this thread~) and download the update for free
If you want the disk, £8 is on a par with all other suppliers of this offer including microsoft and therefore the next best option.
The £5 download is in my opinion a waste of money as the free upgrade direct from microsoft will be here eventually and the 2007 version is what all students and workers are used to, so being one up on the Joneses will be at the cost of that £5

    Hope that helps all

Apologies in advance if this a silly quesion, but I bought Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 for £38.95 in late 2008 - a special offer to university staff and students at the time. Would I be entitled to a free or cheap upgrade?

Unfortunately this offer is only open to purchases made since March this year.
You could try selling your current copy to a friend for that price and then buy your nice shiny 2010 version from the proceeds.

See the 'offer details. In my first post for the exact dates on the microsoft tech gaurantee website

I know i have asked questions about this before but i received an e-mail from software4students today and it appears that i can buy Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus for £47.34. I have Office 2007 Professional but i bought it last year, does this mean that i can buy 2010 Pro Plus without having to buy 2007 and then get the free upgrade?
    Thanks for your help

    Hi

I think you may have got a bit confused.
If you buy 2010 pro plus, that is the top level. There is no upgrade for that.
When the thread was started, it was to buy Office 2007 and upgrade for free to 2010. Now that the 2010 version is available to buy directly, you just buy it straight with no need to do any upgrade as Pro Plus is now the top offering from Microsoft Office.

Software4students, allows you to purchase each version of a software once for each student you have registered on your account. (I have 3 students listed - 2 Grandchildren and a nephew - allowing me to legitimately buy 3 copies as they all stay from time to time)
So, if you have purchased Office 2007 from them last year, you are able to buy the 2010 Pro Plus using the same student as you did for the 2007 purchase.

So long as you comply with Microsoft's student licensing rules (basically - sell to a student or family member of a student) then you can re-sell your 2007 copy so long as you have completely removed it from any computer/s it was installed on
---- this only applies if you have bought the full version of 2010
--- those upgrading must keep their 2007 copy whilst they have the upgrade installed --- selling it would invalidate the upgrade and that 'could' result in updates not being installed or even validation failing at a future update and losing access to the software

So, the answer is, buy the 2010 version presuming you want the latest version.

WHICH VERSION IS BEST FOR ME ?

Those who have 2007 already may find they don't actually need to upgrade yet to 2010. See the software4student comparison between versions (via earlier links in thread) or visit microsoft.com and goto office to see the differences.
Those using Office XP and older versions may find they need to download the patch from microsoft to access 2007 and 2010 written documents. (search microsoft office site for it - it comes up in any search such as 'office xp open 2007 document'). Also, earlier versions of Office will either no longer be supported via microsoft update already or are due to 'retire' soon. The dates vary by version and again, google is your friend here to get more info.

2010 has not yet been adopted by most schools, colleges or businesses. They obviously soon will and for students with more than a year of education left will undoubtably find 2010 will be the norm by then. Those going into their final year will find 2007 will still be the norm for that period.
This is not to say avoid 2010 as all files saved by it are accessible by 2007 and can be saved in backwards compatibility for earlier versions. (for more info on this it is best to google 'microsoft office compatibility' as I could fill 4 A4 sheets explaining it.
