so what if you buy your shopping on line? I have posted separately but had no reply. I bought 9 bottles of beer on line from asda as they were priced at 0 - yes 0. Knew I was chancing my arm but the bill came through with it clearly marked. However when the driver delivered the shopping it was full price - what do you think my chances are?

I'd go for it! You've got nothing to lose - you could say that it was showing as zero, knew that would be wrong but considered that there would be an offer ... half price or BOGOF ... perfectly reasonable assumption in my opinion. If you think about it, if it was showing as zero but the price hadnt changed, then surely an offer should have been in place?

Not sure about ASDA but on the Tesco site for delivery it says the prices are a guide only and the current price will be charged on the day of your delivery.

The added deception is when two different sizes have their weights written in different systems - one metric and the other imperial. You can usually find the comparitive without having to do the whole calculation but they vary the priority between them. I would be interested to see if many other people are aware of this as the staff just agree that it is a bit mad but claim that the prices come down from on high.

I have never seen a weight written in imperial in our local Tesco and I have looked after a few comments on here. Sometimes the loose stuff is in both systems, eg gives price per kg and price per lb, but never on packeted stuff. I have seen some stuff with price per kg and then next to it is a price per 100g and same with litres and millilitres.

If you give some examples I'll look in my local Tesco and see if they are actually from head office or if it is just certain stores.

One thing to remember on the comparison prices, price per kg etc, is that it never includes any offers such as BOGOF so you would have to work them out again.

I always check my receipts before I leave the shop, unless it's Morrisons, I try check as items are getting scanned.

Asda's - I often have at least 1 item that's been overcharged or offer hasn't been applied. I have no problem asking for a £2 giftcard and they always oblige, but certainly wouldn't mention it if I didn't.

Tesco's -had scanned price come up dearer than SEL on many occasions, got to then wait on staff member go and check price then refund.

Morrisons - the worst offender IMO, as said above, I try to check prices as items are scanned, cause Customer services are a nightmare in my local. They make me take them to where I got the item to show them the price. I stated last time that I was sick of been overcharged, and how many other unsuspecting customers were they overcharging too! He didn't even apologise either. There is a fair amount of items that get shelved above the wrong SEL, been caught out like this too, so have to check they match aswell.

Sainsbury's - I never usually have a problem with them, still always check my receipt, but don't think I've ever had an overcharge from them.

I always check my receipt and find tesco to be a bad offender - my main shop I suppose. Asda overcharge too a fair bit and I always get a gift card.

Asda are very bad for this and I always check my receipt. Also ask for the £2
gift card they give for being overcharged. If they say they dont do it anymore
tell them They Do! its company policy.

Since Christmas Eve I have collected £8 in these cards and am hoping to get my Christmas groceries free.

    Thanks,

I'll try and remember this if it happens again, and I'm sure it will.

Reason they probably ask you to go to the place you picked it up is probably either because they have the item in more than one place and if they look at the wrong one it might have the correct price on the SEL and secondly if they come back and say "No, the price is correct" people will argue and then insist on going back to look with the member of staff.

the sad fact is that to avoid getting ripped off we should always check our receipts - and have a memory like an elephant for all the prices. I try and do this but not being a saint often forget. You cannot rely on any supermarket to get it right, although we will never be sure whether its incompetence or dishonesty that causes misprices.
Likewise to get the cheapest groceries its necessary to cherry pick all the best offers at different shops - you pay for the convenience of only going to one shop with higher grocery bills. Since most people don't have time or energy to shop around, this is one way they make their profits.

Yes we should check our receipts more often and fully. I know I will do more of it.

I would think probably a bit of both on the incompetence and dishonesty thing.

I do tend to shop from store to store or cherry pick quite a lot anyway as I am lucky that I pass most major stores or at least within a mile on my way to work.
Prices on named brands and general groceries I have found can vary dramatically between stores, and so it can really be worth it to shop around or leave that item for another day when you can browse the other store.

One thing you also do is check even for fresh goods and meat for the supplier codes next to the bar code. For example salmon may be the same supplier at Tesco and Sainsbury, but the product is often sold several £ per kilo different, meaning big savings can be made. (or losses if you tend to stick to just one store)
I also get email updates on offers from discount stores (netto etc), and stock up on named brands when on a deal, and as I literally pass by it everyday this can be worth it. (york store is quite new and tidy- some I know are pretty dire)
