No they are not. I just got a letter from them re my child benefit and address is HM Revenue and Customs, PO Box 1, Newcastle upon tyne. NE 88 1AA.
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Really, they arent. But I guess we'll have to agree to disagree(!)

It has the HM revenue logo and wording at the top of the letter. I only received it a few days updating my child benefit payments. If it was DWP surely it would say so? Ive just double checked??

Not sure whether they're linked or not, personally i think they 'may' be because of when i changed address April 2009, called Tax Credits 1st to tell them and they said they can do the CB aswell!

Thats what we've been asking for years - they were supposed to be linking us (TCO) to the PAYE system so we could check peoples income, but that was mooted several years ago and still hasnt happened. We have LIMITED access to DWP information, but as this costs HMRC money for every licence granted to use their system, its useage is minimal. Would save a lot of headaches and stop a lot of fraud if we could pull each others info.
monkeybutler, If the specialist team ask for proof of earnings from me, can I give them my self assessment print out when I have done it, as im worrying myself sick about ringing them incase they ask for wage slips etc cos I just dont have anything like that im self employed and dont get a wage slip.

Many thousands of TC customers are self employed, so its nothing unusual, and you wont be asked for proof of earnings beyond those that self employed people usually have so dont worry about it (eg self assessment form). If the tax office are happy with your tax return, TCO usually are too - they'll only ask for further evidence if a random (or one based on suspicion of fraud) is carried out, and then you will be able to provide further evidence (receipts, invoices etc) which im sure you keep anyway.

Despite what a lot of people here think, TCO arent out to make life hard for honest people, but as you can imagine, checks need to be done to make limit fraud, and if youre one of the honest people who gets a compliance check you have nothing to worry about.

themonkeybutler - i take it from your posts you work for TCO. I am surprised that you think Child Benefit is administered by DWP.

As others have said, Child Benefit sits within HMRC and is administered by the Child Benefit Office based in Washington among other places.

I am not allowed to post links, but if you go to the HMRC website you will see the CHild Benefit sections, and then DirectGov shows that HMRC is the department who deals with CB.

you can see the HMRC logo and the information about HMRC backdating your claim. CB moved from DWP many years ago.

Dwp has nothing to do with childbenefit its hm revenue and customs that deal with taxcredit and childbenefit but i dont think they have the same system as taxcredit or links to each other. Also maybe if we was told we would need to keep info ie- wage slips, receipts ect then i think everybody would have kept hold of them. They have never asked us to keep them so why would we?? I dont think people are worrying because they have done something its the stress of getting these detail within 30 days with no explanation and to tell us its to help with our renewal what a joke more like help with causing stress.
