Alas no, there is nothing on HMRC.gov.uk about it (as yet anyway). I know there are a few regular posters on here who work for HMRC/TCO who will hopefully confirm what I'm saying if they see this thread.

i too have got this letter this year and i had a similar one last year, the reason given last year was that my partner had been self employed but had declared a low income.. this was because he work in building trade and work was slow. They just checked what he was earning and asked a few questions about why it was so low. This year he is PAYE no longer self employed so i'm guessing they are just checkin the figures are correct.
As already mentioned above i have been told by an employee the letters are from 'trial areas' and your local office, hence the various names/numbers.

Ill be renewing by post, as usual and I hope that our payments dont get stopped because of that. Ive re read the letter and it doesnt say that you HAVE to renew via that number, just that they would like you to.

I have got one of these letters 2 this year (1st time in 5 yrs claiming) However have had to change my claim to single claim early this yr if that would make any difference ? I know I owe them an overpayment of £1.7k at the renewal as they sent me letter telling me this in feb. Thinking this dept is maybe set up for ppl there are thinking are due them overpayments.

My letter came from paul gerrard on 08456005218, also surprissed to see it has been address to me and EX and my Ex husbands national insurance no is the ref.

I'm thinking about just phoning the normal number and letting them transfer me to this (so called dept) if its on there system ? Don't see why they think i need help renewing ! i've done it for 5 yrs no problem then as soon as i'm a single parent there wanting me to phone certain depts... havent got anything to hide but just miffed that there change'in it from what i'm used to :o

Hi I got a letter to yesterday,in joint names with dh nin on, and read this thread, so phoned the normal tax credits number who said to renew in the noraml way as in the renewal pack, and she went to the team leader who said they had a few calls about this and they were advising people they had heard nothing about this new way to renew & may be bogus letters.
So I am defo going to renew by post or the normal number.

I had the same letter today, i called the main number(helpline) and did my renewal over the phone and it went through. I asked the girl about this letter and she put me on hold to check, when she came back she said "usually if another dept is dealing with your claim a note would be on your account and showing a letter had been sent out". She told me that my claim had gone through and that she would write a note on my claim to say i had this letter but to NOT call it as my claim has already been processed successfully. She went on to say if anything else was needed they would contact me.

If this is genuine, they really need help with their grammar and letter writing skills.

My details where part of the many that were 'lost' a few years back so now id advise anyone to go through the usual channels and if you need to be put through to a different dept then its easy enough to be.

many people have mentioned the details that went missing just wondered how you know yours were one of these. I do remember recieving a letter explaining some details had been misplaced. May even still have it tend to keep all correspondence. Just wondered if you'd been informed in any other way.

I had a letter explaining that my details were one of those 'lost'. Kidda lose faith in them when details as precious as those get into the wrong hands.

The letter i received this morning stated 'dont worry about the cost of the call, we will call u bck if u like' doesn't sound like inland revenue to me
  • These letters are genuine, the pilot is simply part of HMRC's attempts to reduce errors and overpayments caused during the renewal period and to ease the strain on the Tax Credit helpline during their peak period of the year.

The reason the letters have different telephone numbers and addresses are because this particular exercise is being carried out by various different Tax Credit processing offices (as opposed to the contact centres) so batches of the letters are allocated to different offices to spread the load.

I worked for tax credits in 2006/7 and it is about time they started to try and fix all the problems with the system. Could do with a new computer system but it will be just like the last time in the fact it takes so long to develop it is already out of date before they start using it.
