The Specialist Renewals process honestly, 100% isn't an investigation. If you receive a letter asking for further details it will be because there are inconsistencies between your renewal and the details held on the Tax Credit system which have been unable to be verified using the other systems at HMRC's disposal. For example, income below the minimum wage, a child which the Child Benefit system does not show you as a responsible for, Social Security benefit inconsistencies, etc, etc.

Hi there, I am new to this thread but have spent an hour reading all the posts and not sure whether I am now relieved or more worried.

Taxcredithelp - you say that inconsistencies on the renewal & details held on file result in the specialist team asking for further information. I have been claiming tax credits for over 10yrs (since before they were tax credits infact and your tax code used to be changed so you paid less tax). I have always notified the TCO of all changes as soon as they happened. COA, going from employment to self employed, back to employment, change of hrs/days/wage, childcare providers & any changes there too.

My renewal was 99% spot on - I only quoted £200 less on my 2009/2010 renewal based on my P60 (hardly an inconsistency), I am up to date with all notifications - the info they have on childcare is correct, my address is correct, my wage is correct - so if there are no inconsistencies why ask for all this extra information - and bizarre information at that (see below)?

    I sent in my renewal via post as I hadn't received a letter asking me to call a specialist team then a few weeks later I had a letter with the reference HIVR/RYS/T29/LYC asking for my P60 and my childcare contract & receipts. As I don't get receipts & have no idea where my contract is - I asked my nursery to write me a letter on headed paper confiming that they look after my son & what days he goes & how many hrs & costs etc. I sent these off and two weeks later got a letter froma different team based in Birmingham asking for the following;

    P60
    All Payslips
    Contract of employment
    Childcare contract
    Childcare receipts

Statements for the past year from my bank
    Mortgage or rental agreement
    Council tax bill
    Utility bills

I called up confused as I had already sent the items in red above, and was told they have no record of ever asking for them or receiving them and they do not know what the code on my letter is. The number I have is not an 0845 one like everyone else but a Birmingham 0121 number.
I sent in as much information as I could. Obviously my P60 is lost, but I sent in as many payslips as I could, another letter from my sons nursery and statements for the past 4 months (this is as far as I could go back on online banking). I could not send the things in blue as I am living with a friend and everything is in his name. I lost my rented flat due to bad debt 18mts ago and crammed in with my parents for 6mths before my friend offered us his spare room. I explained this in the letter.
I called the Birmingham office today to check they had received everything this time only to be told they now want my friends council tax bill, my car registration document and my car insurance document. I assume the council tax bill is to prove I live here officially, but why the car registration & insurance certificate??? This certainly feels like an investigation to me.

They called my sons nursery today to check with them what they had already confirmed in the letter and asked if my sons father ever pays nursery fees, which they confirmed he did not (as I claim the tax credits - I pay the bill).

I'm starting to be quite worried by everything they are requesting :(

Due to your circumstances, this information is required to ensure that you and your 'friend' are not living together as a couple. Your case has obviously been sent to another team as they were not happy with the initial information you provided, that is why you received a second letter.
  • I have recieved my provisional award today, but the tax credit helpline number are still saying that it has still not been finalised yet, even though I renewed through the specialist department. how long did people wait after recieving there provisional award to getting there finalised award?

I can understand why they are checking everything with you. You are living with a friend so they are obviously checking you are not a couple.

Hi. did you have to send any information in like what other people are saying they have too?

I sent in my renewal back in April and got my 1st letter about 3 weeks later

Well I have bank statements showing I pay £XXX p/mth in rent and am on the Council Tax as a tennant. Yes I can understand they want proof I am just a lodger - but why the car Ins docs & car reg? What has that got to do with it?

P.s - I don't think another team has been sent to look at my info as the team currently requesting EVERYTHING about me have no record of the first letter, no record of any other team asking for it - or of my P60 and letter from my son's nursery being received the 1st time. It seems that 1st letter is a mystery and nothing to do with what I am being asked for now so it's not like I had one team pass me onto another?!?!?
