Sell off public housing. A great move, oh and at the same time don`t build more. All right for my mate Maggzy, as she liked me to call her. I did say at the time she had done pretty well for herself with old Dodgy Den. Mind you, when her and I get together for a fag, I do tell her how I admire young Mark. Good lad him. Likes the old arms deal. Fair few bob in mucking up the third world.

Made a few quid and as she tells me, he`s done a lot better than dragging in benefits. She was never really sure if he was able in holding down a real job. Bit of a thicko it seems.

Anyway, she is happy that Magdalana, her Polish care worker pops around each morning to get her out of bed. Magadalana, on minimum wage does a good job. Maggzy says that she should be grateful for that amount of pay. In her day, there wouldn`t be a minimum wage.

The sense of community has long gone JoeyG - lots of reasons for that (I'm not going into them) but in this day and age there are too many people on the take from those of us working for the 'common' good.

Like a previous poster said, many people brought up in the benefits culture do not even understand their money is earned by other people... I don't see an argument against education here, nor do I see a reason why community should be 'long gone'

I'm not talking about education people to sit exams so they can become managers and earn lots of money, I'm talking about creating a change of culture... remember, we had a sense of community here once!

Nor was I. But I'm bowing out of a discussion on education/curriculum and community as I would be here even longer than I have been already.

The bit that many who go on about a lack of community will not like, is that a functioning community involves judgement upon those that do not follow the unwritten rules. Sadly being judgemental is now considered a sin by many, hence the lack of community.

Being judgemental is fine, but by definition I don't think attitudes like 'let them starve' is constructive for a functioning community.

We have gone so far down this road now we are into 3rd generation wasters now. These people were never going to work "coz they are entitled", as their vermin relations before them. Many are brain dead half wits. How do you turn this around?? I don't remember seeing anything with any clout in any of the manifestos this week. Whoever wins the election will keep chucking the money at them.

The same for me too, not to mention free school meals, money towards school uniform, free leisure passes, free milk, free NHS prescriptions, free childcare (why they need it i don't know!!) free dental the list goes on......with all of these freebies, I would be alot better off on benefits.
It is a complete joke. My husband and I would love to be able to have a big family, but simply cannot afford it.

I cannot believe people are still considering voting labour (unless they are scrubbers, like those in the link or are that well off they are totally out of touch!!)

Well after a break, I forced myself to come back and read the rest of the thread.

Free leisure passes? Where, not in my area.
Free milk? Only if you have a child under 5
Free childcare? Eh? Not heard that one!
Money towards uniform? You can have a £15 grant (stopped in my area 2 years ago) on the child starting school, going into KS2 and then going into KS3.

Re the laptops - It is not just those not working who can receive these, you can be working but a low earner...my sister in law works but as her salary is less than £15k a year, she was eligible to receive a laptop for her eldest daughter. The child also has to be 7 (I think, it may have been 8) years old minimum.

Yes, you do receive free schools meals, free prescriptions, eye tests and dental treatment plus vouchers towards glasses.

In the time I have been claiming benefits, I have had one prescription (I used more when I was working), I get a free check up for the dentists but have paid for the usual polish etc and only had one sight test and got the cheapest pair of glasses I could possibly get.

I have also had one £15 grant for school uniform, which paid for a pair of the new school branded socks....I still had to find the money for the £30 blazer, the £25 pair of shorts, the £30 rugby top, the £25 pair of trousers, the £20 shirt (all items had to be purchased from official sources and all had to be branded with the school emblem...no buying cheapies from Tesco's) for two children.

Only two of my children take up the free school meals, the other is cross site doing GCSE's and because of that, does not have the time to go to either school canteen, so I have to provide a pack up which he tops up with money that HE earns from a part time job.

All of my children have a strong work ethic, they know that once they leave education, I will not accept any child of mine living a life on benefits...even though two will probably have to go into a supported working enviroment.

All of my children were born during my married and working days, none were conceived for extra benefits and because of a hysterectomy at age 31, no more children are possible.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I do not know your personal circumstances but have gleened a bit of info from your sig etc.

I know you were upset but what you have read here but there is a huge difference between people CHOOSING to rely on benefits and having to be on benefits due to circumstances beyond their control.

There are people out there who CHOOSE. They also play the system so well that they wouldn't have paid for any of the uniform you did, would have taken full advantage of the optical/dental benefits.

I, for one, would not begrudge anyone finding themselves in circumstances BEYOND THEIR CONTROL help and support.

Daily in my work I come across people who want more and more and more and know how to get it. A local trend is getting kids diagnosed for ADHD/ASD so you can claim DLA. Word spreads fast, certain GP's are favoured. This is not need it is GREED.

It should concern each and every one of us that people like this can carry on in this way. They will bleed the country dry and cause cuts left right and centre for the deserving.

But that is the thing....when these threads are started, there is no definition made between those who need to claim because of circumstances and those who claim because they can't be bothered to work, we are all lumped in and condemned together.

    And therein lies my annoyance.
