Still "Not Responding"

Further to this thread, my computer is still "not responding".

It is very slow to load pages and respond to tasks, especially for the first hour or so of booting up, it sounds like there is something running even when I am not doing anything and have the computer "at rest".

How can I find out what it is and if/how I can stop it as it appears it may be hogging resources.

Thanks.

download sysinternals from microsoft (free) and run process explorer, that will show you everything that is running + a lot more besides

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

To find out what process is using the CPU time, right click the taskbar and choose "Start Task Manager". Click the processes tab to see what is running. You can sort by CPU usage, memory usage etc. You can also kill processes directly here, although this is not recommended if you don't know what you're doing. The sysinternals suite is good but is for very advanced users really.

Did the Hijack this on the other tread, but only lasted a couple for days then back to slow, (don't know if it helped as previously computer was mostly quite quick)

But will do it again, although everything is taking ages.

You need to look when the system is responding slowly. What is the name of the process/es that are using the CPU?

Eg on mine I can see that setiathome and minirosetta are using lots of CPU time (I know what they are so it's not a problem):

since it appears you have done most things to try and improve everything (just read your last thread) and going by what you say you use the computer for i am just going to throw this into the mix

why not try Ubuntu instead of windows

of course people will think this is just Linux spam but it really is an option for the basic tasks you require and is a lot lighter on system resorces than windows is.

if you are worried about compatability you can run the OS in LiveCD mode to start off with which runs the entire operating system from the CD/DVD drive and your RAM, ok it is slower than a full install but it does allow you to find out if runs on your system without making any lasting changes to it if it doesnt

Sorry it is taking a long time to reply, (it is reminiscent of dial up, but worse).

CPU usage is showing most operations as 00, but System Idle is showing from 00 - 98, with Mem Usage at 98k.

Firefox.exe is also showing from 00 - 98 CPU usage, with Mem Usage at 327464k

The CPU Usage tray icon is showing 11%

Not to sure about this !!!

The computer now does not seem to be "running anything" and is back to being quite quick!
