  • What antivirus are you using?

If Firefox is taking up so much memory do you any add-ons loaded in the browser - Tools > Add-Ons??

Not to sure about this !!!

The computer now does not seem to be "running anything" and is back to being quite quick!

well i am just thinking that swopping to Ubuntu from windows would cover all your basic uses ie iplayer web and email, and would get rid of the slow downs.

ok so it would require some adjustment since it is a different way of doing things but it could be worth it,

i find Ubuntu is a great way of getting new life into old systems, i currently run it on my old Dell latitude x300 ultra portable laptop and its great, even thou it is only a 1.4ghz CPU and have only 512mb of ram it runs just as quickly as my vista gaming system with duel 3ghz CPU and 4gb of ram

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

You appear to be paranoid about security and then wonder why your machine runs like a camel with three legs!

You should uninstall most of your so called security as they are very likely conflicting with each other. Malwarebytes is the only on demand scanner in your list, the others are trying to do similar jobs.

It isonly recently that the computer has been running slowly and I have had those securities for ages, even now the computer is hit and miss between running slowly or running like an express train.

Malwarebytes was installed recently in place of Adaware free and is only run manually, as is Spybot, WD, A-Squared, SuperAntiSpy

AVG is run auto twice weekly

Malwarebytes is an on demand scanner, so no need to uninstall that.

Remove everything else except Spybot and AVG, which you have recently updated to version 9 i.e. it is different now. There is no point the others running unless you have particular problems that need fixing, as they cause conflicts and simply slow the machine down. Windows defender has always been useless, so you won't miss that one.

Why do you have AVG set to run twice weekly? That is not even recommended by AVG! Once a month is more than adequate for most users unless you regularly visit dodgy places on the net!

You obviously just keep installing these extra security programs without learning what they do and how to use each of them!

I installed these programmes from recomendations on this site, as I have said, (and you don't seem to want to acknowledge), I have had these on for ages, but only recently has the computer started playing up like this so IMO it has nothing to do with these progs.

I run AVG twice a week because I was under the impression, (and Spybot and/or A-squared suggest weekly), that these progs should be run weekly, I had AVG daily but took it down to twice weekly As I though it was to much on daily basis.

As far as I know, (and I am sure you will correct me), the only one running in the background is WD, with AVG on auto twice weekly.

Why,( if as you suggest the reason my computer is running slowly is the conflicting security programmes), has it only recently just started running slowly when all those programmes have been installed for ages and have had no detrimental effect?

Just opened WD, and it is telling me it is turned off, now I do not remember turning it off, but if it is not on then it can't be causing any problems!

Will it help getting rid of some of the add ons I posted in #15 ?

Each time a new version of a program is released, it does more than the previous version did - You are not now using exactly the same programs as you were previously!

You have admitted that none of these security programs ever find anything of significance, so why do you bother with them?

I run AVG twice a week because I was under the impression, (and Spybot and/or A-squared suggest weekly), that these progs should be run weekly, I had AVG daily but took it down to twice weekly As I though it was to much on daily basis.

AVG is running it's resident shield in the background all of the time not just twice weekly!

So stick with your three legged camel then! You know best don't you?
