    No I said in my OP;
    .
    I only read this one.
Why start an additional thread for the same problem? Splitting the information is just going to waste people's time.

From that post it sounds like there is a problem with your FireFox - probably an addon as has already been mentioned or possibly a script or flash on some site you are accessing.

I meant this thread, page one OP. that is where the link takes you to.

to be honest i really think you are left with either

buying more RAM and hoping it will fix the problem

formatting and reinstalling windows (after backing everything up of course)

installing Ubuntu as a duel boot and run on that most of the time (once again back up all important files just in case)

formatting and installing Ubuntu (after backing everything up of course)

as i really can not see any other option any longer since you have tried most of the other fixes, it sounds as if something has just gone tits up (i generally call it windows rot) and the amount of time and effort that would be required to find and fix it just isnt worth it

I tend to agree and am actually thinking of upgrading the computer completely, as I understand it will be cheaper than buying more RAM, memory etc and having it installed, backing everything up correctly as it is outside my remit to do all that safely.

I have arranged for an acquaintance? to have a look at the computer remotely tomorrow night and hope he can see something that has been missed.

Yes that more or less rules out the ADSL connection and I'm guilty of not reading all this thread thoroughly.

If it were something going wrong in FireFox though that could easily impact the whole machine and that is all you've pointed to as using a lot of CPU that I've seen.

I run a low power box as a sort of server at home - what frequently cripples that even though the cpu usage is low is heavy hard drive use (typically moving big or large numbers of files). I'm not suggesting that is the problem you are seeing though because I don't see anything much in the post I have read suggesting it is.

well it all depends on how much your want to spend

RAM upgrade (depending on what type of speed RAM you need) should be less than £50 to get 2GB

DVD 100 pack for under £15
    or
a USB external hard drive will be less than £50 with a highish capacity (500gb)

so going as far as buying a hard drive to back up instead of just using DVD's it will only cost £100 to back up and upgrade current system and i can not stress how easy it is to back up your files for example using a external hard drive you litrally just 'drag and drop' or 'copy and paste' the files inbetween your C (drive) folder and the external hdd folder

and adding more ram is a case of a couple of screws to open the case, 2 'latches' per stick of ram to take out the old ones and just click the new ones into place untill the 'latches' click up into place
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

From post #35,( not sure how I can supply more info on this);- "From post #10;- "CPU usage is showing most operations as 00, but System Idle is showing from 00 - 98, with Mem Usage at 98k.

Firefox.exe is also showing from 00 - 98 CPU usage, with Mem Usage at 327464k
The CPU Usage tray icon is showing 11%"

I doubt I have "heavy HD use" as I don't have any large files I need to move.

    Sounds easy enough:D

What about the "operating system" and other(s) that will be on the HD?

Any recommendation for an external HD?

I don't need a large one, my computer only has 80gb, and that is partitioned;-
    'C' , used space 15.6GB, Free space 3.86GB, capacity 19.5GB.

New volume 'D', used space 1.52GB, Free space 55.6GB, capacity 57.1GB.
