Can someone please explain how/why I keep getting "Not Responding" on the top tool bar and how to cure it?

This is getting worse, although sometime the computer works fine.

Sometimes takes an hour or more after boot up to be running OK, this appears to be in all applications, Web, Word, My Documents, Outlook Express etc.

Whemn opening Word it sometimes takes a while to open, then opens with no text, just a grey background and can take several attempts to access the document by closing and opening Word before the existing or new document can be seen, it has taken me ages just to write this post as the text keeps stopping, displaying he egg timer and "not responding".

I am using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.2
XP Home Edition
Ad-Aware SE Personal
A-SQUARED Free
Spybot S&D
SUPERAntiSpyware free edition
AVG 8.5.437 (although this should be edition 9, as I have downloaded this twice? via the pop up reminder!)
Windows Defender

WD and AVG are run on auto.

I scan weekly and rarely find anything of consequence.

EDITED to add;-

ISP; VIRGIN ASDL, up to 8mb, unlimited download
Wireless ASDL router D-LINK DSL 2640R connected via Ethernet cable

Could these be interfering with each other?

How much ram have you got?

    Run this

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php

, and follow clampye's advice, too much security software isn't good for pc performance.

Sorry did not reply earlier, the computer just about stopped yesterday, but today is running like the proverbial express train, including Word opening up very quickly!

Doubtful, as I don't run them together.

AVG runs in the background and on a twice weekly auto scan.

A-Squared is run weekly, manually, as are all others with the exception of Windows Defender which runs in the background(?)

No sure I want to swop security? As I said, it is not run together except for the ones I mentioned running in the background.

The computer normally runs OK, but recently has been having the problems I mentioned earlier

Mine slows like a three-legged dog if AVG is scanning, so if you happen to be using your machine whilst one or more of your security suites is running, then this could explain your problem.

Try disconnecting from the internet and stopping all these security programs for a while, see what that does.

Look at Task Manager to see what apps and processes are using the most CPU and memory.

AVG was not scanning yesterday, the problems seem to occur randomly, and I have stopped all scans that may have been running on other occasions, it never stopped the slow computer.

I do not think it is an internet problem, as Word and othe non internet progs are vey slow, but as I said earlier, it is today running like an express train!

Afraid the task manager, CPU, memory will need some explaining!

I didn't say it was an internet problem, but if you're going to disable all your security options to diagnose, it might be good policy not to be connected and vulnerable at the same time.

Sorry did not imply that you did, just that I did not think it was internet prob due to non internet apps also slow.

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

    ....................................
ADAWARE is next to useless, id uninstall that
AVG ~ clearly not worked correctly. Use the 32 bit AVG removal tool
    http://www.avg.com/download-tools
    Then reinstall AVG 9

In the process of running MALWAREBYTES, seems a long process, (49 mins up to now), for the second time, first one when I left computer for 10 mins, I came back, screen in sleep mode, pressed space key to wake, message "scan in process are you sure you want to stop" I press NO, but it stopped anyway!

Re ADAWARE, it has on occasions found "critical objects" that the others did not, are you sure I should uninstall?
