I would give you my fave spot, except it's on private woodland belonging to oh ex-boss who still lets us use it. (along with still having permission to take away any fallen trees for firewood so he doesn't have to pay someone to do it.)

Will def be trying the vodka thing - we picked loads of fruit from the hedgerows today!

We have lots of plums too that are very sweet - any similar ideas? I am liking the Christmas alcohol thing!!

  • I used to do this until I had a berry compote of local wild berries (free-picked) and it had a maggot in it. I can't bring myself to eat them anymore.

I don't have anything useful to contribute, but I'm also new to Cardiff and will be keeping my eyes peeled for any good blackberrying spots!!! I'll keep and eye on this thread and let you know if I come across any too :)

I went picking last week and have already started my favourite recipe:
Get a 3 litre jar with an air tight lid. Half fill jar with blackberries. Pour in vodka until jar is full. Add 2 vanilla pods and a 6 inch cinnmon stick. Leave til Xmas (preferably in a cool dark place). Sieve through muslin and decant into bottles.

Hi Plum Pie Hope you don't mind me asking - don't you put any sugar in? I made a rhubarb schnapps last year because we had so much but it's the blackberries we're overrun with this time and the recipe said sugar.

  • North London: the old railway branch line (now a country path) that runs from East Finchley past Alexandra Palace has a lot of bramble bushes, and it's a nice walk too.

If you like elderberries, I was recently on a boating holiday on the Ouse, and there were a lot of elderberries growing along the section between Bedford and Huntingdon.

Sorry can't help you with any local sites for picking blackberries but after having read this thread realised the house/gardens our work car park back on to have blackberry bushes poking through and over the fence and to top it all an apple tree overhanging too!
So will be having a free blackberry and apple crumble for pudding tonight.

Sorry, no help again for Cardiff but the yard at work has millions at the moment and i'm just finishing my coffee then going out to try and make a dent in them! Have a feeling they'll see us through the whole winter lolGreat thing is no one else has access and it's nowhere near a road so there wont be any nasties on them (apart from maybe a little bird poo!)
