Have just been given some carrier bags of books and some of them are listed for a 1p. Is it worth listing these if there are lots already at this price. Can I ask what does everyone else do? Is there a number listed at 1p. when you decide it's not worth adding yours?

Hi anastasia, everyone will have their personal opinions but here's mine:
I never sell books at 1p but if there are 1p books I will sell them at 95p as a minimum, that way I will get £2-ish after costs (I am pro-m), but my rule is that if the list of 1p books goes onto the next page then I don't list it because I don't think many people go past the first page of 25 books (I think) so then I will put those books on Green Metropolis. Even when there are 10 or more 1p sellers somehow mine will still sell, I don't think some buyers trust 1p sellers.

Right, just been through the Royal Mail site with a finetooth comb and without an original certificate of posting they won't look at any claims.

I've just had another email from an irate buyer about another missing cd.
looks like everything I sent on the 14th, 15th and 16th has gone missing. Waiting for 3 more buyers to contact me.

Think I might have to forget selling my games and cds as I can't get to a post office during the day and can't afford to send them without a COP.

I'm feeling very depressed at the moment. Damn RM.

    Hi G-man,
There is a thread on MSE somewhere about how to save money on postage and there is someone on that thread who works for RM, he said that especially during busy periods leading up to christmas is when things go missing due to temps, but there are also some perm staff who steal mail. He said that CDs and DVDs are very easy to detect and will often go 'missing' so it might be best to make it look different in the package or get proof of postage.

Hope that helps, it hasn't happened to me yet, probably coz I just sell books, but I get worried all the time because I don't get proof as I use online postage.

In terms of getting your money back without COP, I would send an email or ring someone saying that in their emails it says that online postage can be tracked and quote the following that you get from their online postage emails:

We have made some checks against this item and can inform you that your requested refund has been refused/accepted.
Please note that Royal Mail may prosecute against any fraudulent postings that are received. Users can be traced via the encryption within the unique bar code on items purchased via online postage.

This was an email I got when I requested a refund because their online postage wouldn't work once, so apparently these barcodes make them trackable, so if they can check to see if an item has been posted to check whether to email me or not then why couldn't they check to see if its been posted when it's been 'lost'.

Thank you apprentice tycoon - I'm off to amend my signature now.

Just for info, mine was a James Patterson book which I bought as I wanted to read it myself - hadn't even thought of selling it on Amazon then. It sold this morning for £3 which means it only cost me 73p to read it (thank you Tesco) not a profit I know but still £3 more than I would have had :D

For my future sales though I'm going to be scouring boot sales - roll on Sunday! :j

  • Hi bluekp, I love new sellers getting excited :j it takes me back to my first sale, it was a Patricia Cornwell book and I remember telling my then cynical 17 year old son about it, I was SO pleased and told him that I'd made a pound profit, he just couldn't appreciate the reason for the excitement, what I saw was the possibilities, he saw just £1.

    He's changed his attitude now!

Number 37 is the next available so please feel free to claim it

    Hi AT

I wonder if everyone remembers their first sale? The first book I sold was Ruby by Maggie Glen http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ruby-Red-Fox-Picture-Books/dp/0099865505/sr=1-5/qid=1159889250/ref=sr_1_5/202-9632378-2627849?ie=UTF8&s=books (it was one of my children's old books).

It sold on the day I listed it, the buyer left me feedback really fast and I've been bitten by the bug ever since.

  • I've just had a triumph and disaster all in the one book - it was an arty photograph book that sold for £22, that's the good bit - the bad bit was that there was a gift inscription on the flyleaf and it had been crudely scribbled out AND I FORGOT TO MENTION IT!!!

I emailled the buyer, it bounced straight back so I thought that the only thing to do was refund and explain in the 250 spaces you get what had happened.

I've re-listed lower so he might just come back again.

I don't want to jinx anything but...I've sold 6 books in less than 24 hours on Amazon alone which is a record for me.

I'm actually feeling quite dazed. :j

hehe i sold two £20 pound books this week i do notice books sell better when its raining ! so bring on the bad weather !
  • I just read this thread on the Amazon discussion board. The information on how much stock sells each week depending on whether it is newly listed is interesting, so is the information about which books to 'weed out'.

Was your packing waterproof? If not, it may have got damp and slightly mildewy in the post.

Well... the postage time did coincide with the rain we had, but that's hardly my fault :(

If I have to send everything waterproof now I'm screwed! ;)

I send most of my books with bubble wrap and Morrisons garden sacks doubled and cut to size. I then stick a printed address label with sellotape over it. They look very smart and have had no complaints (as yet!) hope I am not jinxing myself ;). This way they are water proof, however if they were to be left out in a violent storm with heaving rain, I assume the sellotape would come undone on the label. Fortunately that is not too likely!

    HTH.
