Tee hee sorry couldnt reply was laughing too hard !!

Its a musty, smoke smell its quite strong, the books belong to my brother in law and his dad smoked lots Dont think its anything worse than that.

    mishka

Because I don't smoke I would probably 'neg' someone if they sent me a book that smelt of smoke and hadn't mentioned it in their description. If I get a smokey book I always mention it in the description and it doesn't seem to put buyers off - I guess there are a lot of smokers out there!

I will go down my shed later and see if my cat litter box (containing clean cat litter!!!) has worked in removing the smells from the book that I left in there a while ago as an 'experiment'.

I also have an area under my desk where there is a cardboard box of other books and I tend to leave smokey books on the top to 'air' - usually by the time they sell they don't actually smell of smoke.

Other tips I have heard of are Neutradol Gel in a box with the smelly books - but I can't confirm whether this works or not.

Some of my auctions wins have had that old musty smell and it is really difficult to get rid of. I've used fabric softner sheets and air freshners but the best is really just a good old fashioned airing.

Oh and my whinge earlier worked in double quick time as I've just sold a book, one of the last I listed so I'm chuffed.

    Hi
About to have a MOAN as have sold nothing on amazon today (how different it was to last week when I'd had my best week ever)
On another note - I got 3 different copies of the 'paris review' #34,36,38 from a load I bought from e-bay. Was a bit miffed as I couldn't list them on Amazon. However, I took the initiative and e-mailed one of the book shops selling them (as seen on bookfinder as they are worth a bit) and asked if he would be interested in buying them from me. Today I had an e-mail offering $35 for 2 of them (I forgot to tell him about the 3rd one) have replied mentioning the other and await his reply. So this is a lesson - don't give up on those books you can't list as someone somewhere wants them!!!! watch this space for the update!!!
    Happy selling
ok have sold 2 of them for $50 (postage and packing added) very happy now

I've just bought a scanner to list my books on Amazon ( have rather a lot). It's working fine and makes the Amazon listing even quicker if that's possible. However, I would also like to use it to list the large number of paperbacks I have aquired, on Green Metropolis. You know what's coming next, the scanner doesn't work on GM. Anyone out there got any ideas. I feel sure I must be doing something wrong or missing something. Anyone with a scanner used theirs on GM? Thanks.

    Hi All

Sorry if this has been asked before but with all the pages to go through I've got a little lost.

I am a long time ebay user and regularly used it to get rid of stuff I've collected over the years. I now have some out of print theatre related books I want to sell and was wondering if switching to Amazon would be better. Like most i'm getting a little fed up with Ebay and iffy buyers.

Inparticular from a sale do you stand to make more via Amazon or Ebay (once all the fees have been paid and the buyer has paid by Paypal)

If anyone could help sum it up in a nutshell I'd really appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Kev

    Hi Kev,

Welcome to the (in)famous Amazon thread! :)

The main benefit with Amazon is that you don't have any worries about payment or non-payment as the buyer pays Amazon directly and Amazon then pay that money straight into your bank account.

As regards fees, Amazon fees are generally higher but books tend to sell at higher prices, so it evens itself out. There is also the benefit that there are no listing fees. You can have a book listed for as long as you want and if it doesn't sell, then you won't have lost anything trying.

I'd have a look on Amazon and see what prices your books are being offered at and, if it's worth it, give it a shot. :)

Just saying hello as I've been away for a week and now you are on a new thread.
When I returned from my hols I had a video returned by Royal Mail. I have addressed it correctly and have emailed the buyer but had no response - very strange.
Hopefully now I have posted here lots of sales will come my way.

Hi, I asked this on the last thread but didnt get a response :(

What do you do about smelly books? Is there any way to get rid of it or do you include it in the item description ?

Someone here suggested putting books in a box with a Neutradol gel air freshener. I've done this and after a month or so they stank of Neutradol. However, after a week , they smell ok. I haven't been brave enough to list anything smelly, in case of poor feedback. I've also tried nappy bags, which smell ncer, but I haven't found as effective. Depends how smelly they are I suppose.

Don't know how anyone else feels, but I wouldn't buy a book if it was described as being smelly, although I own plenty!

    Hi Daisy

I don't know what the technical reasons are behind this but I think is is linked to how Amazon and GM interpret the number from the scanner. The listing page on Amazon is set up to work from the bottom number on the bar code (the ISBN is the top number), whereas the GM listing page isn't, it requires the ISBN. This is also true of the advanced book search page on Amazon - it doesn't work via the scanner which inputs the bottom number from the barcode - but this Amazon page needs the top number which is the actual ISBN.

So, you're not doing anything wrong, your scanner is working okay, it is the information that the listing/search page needs that is different.

Hope that makes sense - you could try phoning your scanner manufacturer to see if there is a way that the scanner can be programmed to translate the barcode number into the ISBN before it transmits it.
