The Great 'Shrinking Food' Hunt

  • With these shrinking products, I wonder if it would be worth switching to a slightly more expensive concentrated version of a product than stick with the original and pay the same money for less.

Absence is as important as abundance.

It's not just food. Wilkinsons have just reduced the size of their Lawn Feed to 800ml instead of 1litre. A price increase of 20%.

And Poundworld have done a couple recently. Their spray lubricant used to be 300ml but is now 250ml.

I also noticed that DOFF lawn feed sold at poundworld and others has halved in strength from an NPK of 15-3-3 to 7.5-1.5-1.5. That means you have to use twice as much so is an effective doubling in price. A 100% price increase is massive by anyones standard!

Whereas I would rather abandon metrication - the cause of the swindles we have been subjected to over the past few decades.

Glad to see several leading supermarkets now switching back to a measurement system people actually want.

I don't think metrication and swindles are linked, sure any change can cause confusion that others might exploit for there own gain, but do you really think there wouldn't be as many if we'd stayed with imperial? I for one would not like to see the time return when I'm standing in the middle of a shop trying to work out whether it is cheaper to buy three 12 fl oz. bottles for 3/6 or one 2 pint bottle for 4/.
"People" don't want it, just a few vocal and nostalgic intransigents.
Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

You wouldn't think from looking from the bottles of lawn feed that the contents has gone down 20%, 5% maybe. Clever design of bottle.

I know they've been mentioned elsewhere in the forums but I'm surprised no-one's commented here on tins of Quality Street and other chocolates. They've been shrinking for years.

Very clever indeed! I normally look out for these size reductions (I know, sad) but my wife bought this and I didn't notice it at first.

I still think the DOFF trick was sneakier though, halving the strength. I bet most people didn't notice that one. At least the Wilko one is still full strength. I get through quite a bit of this as I feed my Bonsai trees with it as they need a high nitrogen feed for the early part of summer.

A new one for you to notice. Cathedral City Cheddar gone from 400g to 350g, 12.5% price increase...... Sneaky gits.....

Asda have refused to stock the new pack sizes citing a reluctance to go along with the 'subterfuge'. How very customer focused of them (sarc), however it does stock the new Extra Mature 350g pack size as that was replaced a while ago (ie: no-one noticed then!!) Thanks Asda!!!
