Just renewed my car insurance today with J N Bailie. Despite several issues (i.e. I had an accident last year) they still managed to come within a few quid (£6 to be exact) of the best internet price I could get. I have used J N Bailie for both my cars for quite a few years now and they have always managed to come close to any other deal - and I don't mind paying a few quid to support a local company.

a word of warning with Quinn direct; after a lot of phoning around and comparing prices, they were the cheapest insurance group i could find...until you actually have an accident. then you realise the pitfalls! i had a fairly trivial accident where my car skidded on oil, but unfortunately the axle was buckled and needed replacing. with Quinn direct i had to pay the first #300 up front and then they advised me if i claimed for the rest of the bill, i would lose my 2 years no claims, and would have on my record that i'd made a claim, so even if i went elsewhere my premiums would be very high. i ended up footing the #1200 myself. Quinn don't let you 'protect' your no claims bonus unless it is full. so like i say it was the cheapest insurer i could find - just don't have an accident!

Im 24 yrs old and drive a group 8 peugeot 1.6 xsi I have had my insurance with elephant.com for 3yrs cheapest by hundreds.

Top tip when renewing insurance with elephant re-enter your details on the online quote (putting on as many 40+ females as you can and limit your mileage) as if you are a new customer, if cheaper tell them you want the renewal price the same.

Quote comes through for the renewal, ring and ask for further discount in my experience this is at least 10%.

Days prior to the payment coming out of your bank account ring again asking for a further discount this is usually 5%.

In my last renewal on top of the discounts I was given. I got Protected no claims bonus for no extra cost.

Failing elephant try FA Poots in Dromore Co.Down most competitive broker in my experience.

Warning avoid Hughes and Co disasterious when settling claims with.

Its strange that putting on multiple 40+ females should lower the cost. Recent statistics have shown that women are only safer drivers up until the age of 37 whereupon it changes to men being the safer of the two.

I wish I could. It was on the news on the way into work the other day and the only reason I remembered was because it surprised me. If I get a chance I will trawl the web and see if I can find the article that the newsroom must have been using.
