Have been following this link with interest: Am in the market for a king sized mattress: was almost bedazzled in John Lewis today:j(jumping up and down on mattresses) into buying a 3200 pocket sprung mattress at £1009 (made by Spink & Edgar), resisted however: My initial gut instinct was to buy one from "Thesleeproom.com" at a more modest £495 - This mattress seems to tick all boxes (1400 pocket springs) and I just love the ethos of the company not to mention the fun querkyness of the web-site. Has any bought a mattress from this site or have any knowledge of the quality of the mattresses they sell ?

It looks like they only make one model for adults.

To start with I thought great an independent manufacturer. Then I saw the lies they tell about most other manufacturers using cheap springs from China. Well actually most of the bed industry in the UK is in the Yorkshire/Lancashire area. And most of the independent manufacturers use springs made local to that area.

Then I read the worst part......the mattress is non turn. Which means that it won't last anywhere near as long as a two sided mattress.

Also they go on about giving you a full refund if you don't like it within 14 days BUT they don't let you unpack it. So you can't actually sleep on it properly.

They seem ok, but look like they only have one mattress for adults like Tim said which seems strange as you would think that they would have more of a range. As far as my research goes so far, damask is not a very good fabric for mattresses. (The sleeproom beds look excellent though.)

Thanks Tim for tip before but I just can not find anyone on the net apart from man from bed –factory, that will allow you to sleep on mattress after you buy and still be able to return it if your not happy. Bed –factory is also based in and around Manchester (I am based in the south).

I myself am looking for a double sided mattress, good luxury fabric and hand side stitching, around 1500 pocket springs and Medium tension, All these spec are important to me. I have spent the last few days on the net trying to find a good well made mattress for around £800 (Divan or bedstead included). I have come up with the name Salus which you can only buy in showrooms and not on the net. There is a place local to me that I will visit on the weekend to see for myself.

Who told you damask is not a good fabric for mattresses???

There are actually quite a few who give satisfaction guarantees that allow you to unpack and sleep on them.

Salus are part of Beasley, and their mattresses contain the smaller, less supportive, and hotter reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs.
  • I recently bought a mattress from Bensons for Beds having had a profile carried out on their test bed. "Sleep 2 Live 700, Green". The first night I slept on it my back and legs ached like mad, it is way too soft. I thought I would do another profiler test at another of their stores and this one came up with a different mattress..!! They told me that they would refund my £1,200 and collect the mattress over a month ago. I have now involved Trading Standards Consumer Direct and my credit card company to sort this out..!! I then went to John Lewis and bought their Ortho 3, unable to return mattress, at £600, which seemed fine in the store but this time I found it way to firm, this time the pain was in my hips. You can imagine my frustration, cost and that my house is now turning into a mattres store. I have had an MRI on my back and various problems have been found. I really need to get this right on my third attempt and would appreciate any assistance you can give.
    Many thanks.

I'm afraid this demonstrates just how useless a gimmick the Sleep to Live computer is.

If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.
  • Thanks Tim.

I am sorry, if I had read previous posts I would have been able to stop you constantly repeating yourself..!!

Thank you for your advice, I wish I had know this two months ago though, it would have saved me lots of time, trouble and cost.

    I will be in touch.!!

    Cheers.

No problem. I get used to repeating myself because there is always someone new to the forum who can't possibly read all the old threads.

I do copy and paste alot...lol
  • Tim, a few months ago i went to a Centre Parcs resort for a week and throughly had the best sleep i've had for years. I knew it was time to change the mattress at home after 13 years of service and the probable cause for my aches and pains. Checked the mattress which was a Sealy Forest Dreams and thought must look into this when i got home. Sometime later decided to start my quest for a new mattress only to find just how immense the task was going to be.
  • I found out the mattress was exclusive to Centre Parcs and decided to try to find an equivelent locally before making my final decision on such an important purchase. Anyway found what i thought to be the best and most comfortable mattress after testing all the mattress suppliers in my area, some 86 try outs including the crappy Sleep to Live test. I planned to try before i buy, then look for the best online deal for that mattress. In my search online, came across this thread as i was searching for the Sealy Sydney mattress (not found anywhere, except on Bensons website) coincidently the shop that carried out the crappy Sleep to Live check which i totally ignored as it suggested with my aches and pains i should go for a firm mattress.
  • So my question to you is i have read all the posts on this thread and have learnt so much and thank you for spending your time educating us novices but do you have an opinion on the Centre Parcs purchase as they are a big company exploting the fact you go there to have fun and relaxation but not to buy beds or mattresses, they also state on their website they have now changed all 13,000 beds to this range.
As this worked for me, for a week, i am a little confused as they only wanted £537 as i almost bought the Sealy Sydney mattress, this morning, if it were'nt for your eye opening advise, for £850. I would have thought they would not commit to such an investment if they were not a decent mattress, but what do i know. I would be very interested in your point of view.
