For all those people who have been put off posting by the trolls (or should I say 1 troll under 4 different names) who have invaded the forums. It is possible to put them all on ignore, so that you don't have to listen to all their lies and abuse.
sleepcrusader actually said that whatever I say he will make it his mission to counter it. So in other words he isn't telling the truth, he is just arguing for the sake of arguing. This is the definition of a TROLL.0 -
Hi,
I've been looking into buying a new mattress for a few weeks and have tried a range. I have decided that a pocket spring, king size will be best. I have seen 2 mattresses of similar spec 1200 spring, lambswool and white fibre/hempure. Tried both and both seem nice. One made by Hypnos (£699) and the other by Spink and Edgar (£599).
I have 2 questions: 1. Are they both good manufacturers of mattresses?, 2.Would I be paying over the odds?
any help would be appreciated.0 -

1) They are both fairly good as far as the big brands go, although to get a good Hypnos you would need to spend a huge amount of money. Spink & Edgar vary in quality, and they are starting to use many of the pointless gimmicks used by some of the bigger, lower quality manufacturers.
2) Yes you would be paying well over the odds. If you stay away from big brands and big retailers, and shop on line, then you will get better quality and spec for less money.0 -
Hi all,
We are looking for a new bed and during a trip to the bed shops found two beds we liked very much ,suprisingly they are both made by Sealy as I didn't think they were a very good brand before finding these.
The two we liked are the Sealy Sydney http://www.bensonsforbeds.co.uk/sydney-range-sealy-international-collection/Divan-Sets/Sydney-King-Size-2-Drawer-Divan-Set;50985.aspx
and the Sealy Sorrento (cant find this anywhere online but this looks similar http://www.sleepingsolutions.co.uk/home.php?cat=9786
One of the problems with this manufacturer is that the beds all seem to be given different names in every store so it is difficult to check prices and reviews so any experience of Sealy in general and these beds in particular would be most welcome.
Thanks

You shouldn't be fooled into thinking that they are a good brand. The problem with the Silentnight group (who own Sealy) isn't with the comfort when new, it is with long term reliability, and the useless gimmicks they use. Like the so called patented unicase system, which is just their variation on the cheaper and less supportive reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs. The miracoil spring system, which is just the cheap, noisey, and very unreliable continuous spring system. The innergetic latex which isn't natural, but is a blend that contains some natural latex, and doesn't have the same properties as natural latex. They also only use a very thin layer of latex, and when they use terms like 'zonal support' for it, this means that it doesn't cover the full surface area, but is just in the middle where your buttocks would be.
So basically they are made as cheaply as possible, but made to look very high spec. And they charge very high prices.
It is actually the big retailers who get the manufacturers to make re-name their products, so that they can give price promises, but you can't buy them anywhere else. Which means that they can charge what they want.
If I were you I would stay well away from big brands, and big retailers, and shop on line instead.0 -
Thanks a lot for your feedback Tim.
Now, I know that you can't recommend brands on this forum but are you able to give advice as to what to look for in a cheaper/non-big name mattress which would help a novice find a good deal? Like I said, a pocket sprung kingsize with a minimum of 1200 springs is about all I know about what i want.

Is there any reason you are looking for a minimum of 1200 pocket springs?0 -
Hi Tim,
you mention quite frequently that we should avoid big retailers and big brands. If you can not recommend the 'brands', are you able to recommend some online retailers that:
- carry these so called non-big brand mattresses that are of high quality
- have the satisfaction guarantee that actually allows consumers to unpack and sleep on mattress
Most consumers like ourselves only know of the big brand names and big retailers, so it is hard for us to identify/distinguish between what is a big brand name and what isn't.

The reason I have decided on minimum 1200 srings is becaus the other mattresses i tried which have less, felt like they gave less support. However, like I said, I know little about attresses so if you could give some advice s to what to look for or avoid in a good, cheaper/non big brand mattress, that would be great.0

More than 800 pocket springs in a king size mattress is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. If a mattress has too many springs, then to fit them all into the mattress, and to keep the same firmness, then they would have to be very small and weak, and can get damaged easily. I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 springs.
Avoid mattresses with reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs, and go for ones with full size steel springs. Also avoid mattresses that are bulked out with reflex foam.
You would probably find that the mattresses you tried that you found less supportive were just lower quality mattresses, and that it wasn't really anything to do with the number of springs.0
