Pocket sprung mattresses don't tend to come much firmer than medium to firm, but you should be able to get a good quality medium to firm one for your budget.
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -
I recently bought a bed and mattress from MattressMan and was pleased with both the products and service. I ordered late Friday night and it was delivered 9.00 Monday(Free).
6% Topcashback/Quidco and there are some voucher codes about but they may screw up the cashback.0 -

Thanks - I was struggling to find anything better than medium to firm so that explains it.

at the moment i have a slatted base but i have read your comments and intend on adding extra slats to narrow the gap between them.
what type of mattress would i be looking at for firm support ?
i'm actually looking to get a mattress similar to the following ikea mattress which my girlfriend tried and liked :
ikea.com + /gb/en/catalog/products/70156352
thanks in advance0 -

If you want a firm mattress then open coil springs would be better, and you wouldn't need to add extra slats.
Although Ikea call their mattress pocket sprung the one you mentioned only actually contains 280 springs in a double. So it is really a reflex foam mattress with a few springs dotted about inside it so that they can call it pocket sprung.. They do say it has latex in it, but this isn't natural latex it is synthetic. Foam mattresses like this can be very ot, and in general Ikea mattresses are low quality.0 -
thanks tim.
i have long given up on the idea of an ikea mattress but i have to find one of similar firmness to the ikea mattress that my gf tried.
can you recommend which type of mattress i should be looking at to get a similar firmness to the ikea mattress ?
many thanks for your assistance and time so far !0 -
After reading loads of the old massive mattress thread I went for a La Romantica Charlotte Double Mattress (pocket Sprung) - which is around your budget.
It started off really comfortable, however after having it for 9 months I am not sure I would buy this again. I am sure I am starting to feel the springs a little.

Send it back, it sounds to be faulty.0 -

If i run my hand firmly over the mattress, in most places it is well padded, but in a places the padding seems very thin and I can feel metal.0
