I thought £450 was a bit steep too. Our plan was to 'try it out' in showroom, and then if we like it, order same (or very similar, now that I know the manufacturer) from an online seller with satisfaction guarantee etc etc............

You no like 2000 springs Tim?

If a king size mattress has at least 800 pocket springs, then this is enough to do what pocket springs are designed to do. Some manufacturers make mattresses with 2000 or even 3000 springs in their mattresses (and then charge the earth). The truth is that in order to fit so many springs in a mattress, then each individual spring has to be so small and weak, that they break very easily. So I usually recommend between 1000 and 1800 springs.

This might fit the bill. In JL:

JL 1218 Pocket Luxury 1 Mattress, Double
    http://www.johnlewis.com/230436589/Product.aspx

Made by Spink & Edgar, £450

Forgetting the price and JL for a moment (bear with me Tim....) the spec looks pretty good:

    1218 spring in Kingsize (Revolution)
    Two rows hand side stitching
    Double sided
Filling: 1050g cotton rich blend, 450g resilient white fibre

    http://www.johnlewis.com/Magazine/Feature.aspx?Id=342

    Update:

JL also have a mattress in their 'Clearance' (not quite the same as a 'Sale') same price, similar spec:

JL 1250 Pocket 'Classic' Mattress double £450
    http://www.johnlewis.com/230587458/Product.aspx

Not 100% sure if the 'Classic' mattress is double sided. Dunno who manufactures either. Could be Hypnos, I think they use 'Revolution' springs, and an assistant told us they make beds for JL.

    I give up!!!!!

You are still going for big brands at high prices

The revolution springs are just a gimmick used to push the spring count up, and serve no purpose.

Most pocket sprung mattresses have side stitching, but what you actually see on the side of the mattress is just cosmetic, and not the actual side stitching. The side stitching is hidden behind the border.

The first one is made by Spink & Edgar. I don't think it is Hypnos who make the others, or they would advertise the fact.

I think that all JL own brand mattresses are non turn.

Calm down dear! Deep breath, take it down to Defcon 5.

Our trip to JL yesterday was useful but no purchase. All the pocket springs we tried were ok but not very comfy. Think they were light on the top fillings. Maybe at our price point £400 - £450 for a double, the fillings you get are minimal (at JL at anyrate). You don't get mem foam and pocket for that price at JL, although you could just scrape a mem foam and open sprung.

So today we thought we'd give memory foam + pocket another go elsewhere. Visited a large Bed Shed for a memory foam afternoon. They had three pocket sprung mem foams side by side that it was useful to compare. A 1000 pocket +50mm mem foam, a 1500 pocket + mem foam and a 2000 pocket + mem foam.

Being able to jump from mattress to mattress was handy. We liked the 1500 Pocket Mem Foam 'Deluxe'. Double was on offer for £379, ('ticket price' showed £439.99)

    Memory 1500 Deluxe
    http://www.thebedshed.net/bed/index.php?action=product_detail&cat_id=429&size_id=1212

Felt it was just the right amount of mem foam in the 1500. 50mm the salesman said. + a Coolmax cover. All were Single sided. We liked it, comfy but supportive. I could feel the springs when checking the sides so definitely pocket and not foam encapsulated as some are.

No doubt Tim will drop in to let us know that these mattresses are overpriced, made of hay/straw by Chinese children, will give the user a variety of particularly undesirable diseases, and likely to spontaneously combust after 28 days use. This can of course be avoided by buying online from a seller with a satisfaction guarantee, and by buying a mem foam pocket sprung mattress with the letters 'L' and 'R' in the brand.

    :D

Next week we might go on a SilentNight try out. Watch this space.

Do LR make beds for bedshed? That bed we saw at Bed Shed looks v similar to La Romantica mattresses, same machine design finish (curvy zig zags on side, and side to side stripped cover). LR make one sided mem foam pocket sprungs with 'Cool Max' covers too....... maybe just coincidence?

I think it is just a coincidence.

    Just an update.

The JL 'Pocket Ortho' range of mattresses (http://www.johnlewis.com/230436608/Product.aspx) is made by Hypnos. I have checked and it says 'Hypnos' on the mattress label. Different JL staff have also advised this.

Re 'revolution springs' - do you mean they 'double count' each spring column as it has two springs in it (ie a tall and short one)?

Wierdly JL say that their pocket sprungs by Hypnos can be turned and are double sided, but are marketed at 'No need to turn'. So now with pocket sprung mattress that is double sided (we checked in JL by turning a pocket ortho over and lying on it, yes is exactly same on both sides), JL prefer to market it as 'No need to turn'. This i assume they can appeal to the section of the market that think 'No need to turn' makes the bed 'better' constructed, and is a feature (rather than a saving for the manufacturer), and if a potential buyer like me says they are ideally looking for double sided, JL sales staff can say "it is double sided, so you can actually turn it if you want to"?!
