  • By the way, i'm a big lad at 6'3" and 17st therefore i'm after the King size mattress and have learnt size does matter with regards to spring size, spacing and a whole raft of other criteria that goes into the making of one of the most important purchases we all will make from time to time.

Tim, a few months ago i went to a Centre Parcs resort for a week and throughly had the best sleep i've had for years. I knew it was time to change the mattress at home after 13 years of service and the probable cause for my aches and pains. Checked the mattress which was a Sealy Forest Dreams and thought must look into this when i got home. Sometime later decided to start my quest for a new mattress only to find just how immense the task was going to be.

Sealy are part of the Silentnight group:eek:. You should do a seach in the MSE forums before you even consider them.

What you have to consider is that places like Centre Parks probably change their mattresses every 12 months, and so long term reliability isn't important to them.

Does anyone know if the Duplex Slumberest Orthopaedic mattresses are still on the go or have they been taken over/rebranded? Ours now need replacing but it has been such a fab mattress would ideally like to replace it with the same but search results don't appear to bring it up??

Local shop stocks a lot of 'Healthy bed' mattresses-any input on them?

The Duplex spring system is just two layers of open coil springs, which are available from many manufacturers.

From that I assume it was only a 'basic' lol it was so comfy :) From reading it appears that I need to be looking at the pocket sprung.
Any input re the 'healthy mattreses'? Tried one and it felt ok but that was only for 5 mins although the downside was I don't believe it could be turned.

I'm afraid this demonstrates just how useless a gimmick the Sleep to Live computer is.

If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.
Hi Tim. I have been looking at various mattresses to replace the Sleep to Live mattress disaster. I sued Bensons for Beds and have just got Judgment by default through the small claims court..!! I have been looking at the VI Spring mattresses (Tamar) in John Lewis and it does seem very comfortable. I know you say avoid the big retailers and I am trying to do so, but is it likely I can get the same quality elsewhere. I am of course assuming that you feel that this mattress is quality and you may disagree..? John Lewis say that the mattress is only guaranteed if you buy the base to go with it, which seems a con to me..? You are not able to return this mattress if it has been unpacked, which is not as good as various online offers. I really want to get it right this time and any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers.
    Rick.

I used to have a Vi-Spring bed myself, and to be honest I didn't find it anything special. They are very over priced and over rated. You could actually get an equivalent quality two sided mattress (the Tamar is non turn and so won't last as long), for about a third of the price that John Lewis charge.

Thanks Tim. So it looks like my search continues. Not sure where to go now as it's nice to try the mattresses before ordering one, which you can't do with online orders. I know that you can get a seven day free return with some companies, but I don't want to mess anyone about. I will keep looking.
Thanks again for your valued advice.

Well you have to take into account that you can only get a very rough idea by trying a mattress for 10 mins in a shop, fully clothed. And this actually tells you nothing about what the mattress would be like to actually sleep on.
