    Hi Tim,

you mention quite frequently that we should avoid big retailers and big brands. If you can not recommend the 'brands', are you able to recommend some online retailers that:
    - carry these so called non-big brand mattresses that are of high quality
    - have the satisfaction guarantee that actually allows consumers to unpack and sleep on mattress

Most consumers like ourselves only know of the big brand names and big retailers, so it is hard for us to identify/distinguish between what is a big brand name and what isn't.

    Thanks

I'm afraid I can't. It will just take some searching I'm afraid.

No problem Tim. I'm after a king mattress. You have recommended pocket sprung with memory foam. However wouldn't the memory foam trap heat in this case?

Additionally is there a big difference between full size pocket springs with memory foam mattress vs full size pocket springs only mattress? I'm 75kgs and my wife is 50kgs.

Another item i am having difficulty with is ascertaining which one of these have 'full size' pocket springs. Would you be able to advise on the below as well as advantages/disadvantages:
    - la romantica madrid
    - la romantica venice
    - la romantica charlotte
    - Any matresses from Kozeesleep range that has full size pocket springs?

    Thanks again

Not if it has full size pocket springs, because they wouldn't be surrounded by a thick wall of reflex foam, and the air can circulate through the spring layer to help dissipate the heat.

The memory foam is only there to mould to your body, and provide even support, without causing pressure points.

Although pocket springs contour to your body, they can still cause pressure points. So the addition of memory foam eliminates these.

For your weights I would recommend a medium mattress.

All of the above contain full size steel springs.

Thanks Tim. This is great info!

I've also read that it is recommended to place a pocket sprung mattress on a flat surface, such as a divan set up, rather than placing it on top of a slatted bed base.

In this case, would placing a pocket sprung mattress on the floor be suitable?

Any recommendations on a bedframe that is modern looking, yet does not have a slated bed base? The only one i could find was this ikea mandal, but it doesn't come with a headboard. Something like this with a headboard with a headboard would be great. I just don't prefer the look of a divan set up.

With pocket sprung only, or non turn pocket sprung with memory foam mattresses you would be best laying a sheet of pegboard or hardboard over the slats to prevent the springs trying to push through the gaps and damage the mattress. If you go for a mattress that is two sided pocket sprung with memory foam, then it would be ok with gaps between the slats of up to 3".

I wouldn't recommend using a mattress on the floor long term, as you wouldn't want grit from the carpet becoming engrained into the mattress.

If you go for an Ikea base, then you will end up having to pay extra for continental size mattresses, as the Ikea mattresses are terrible quality.
  • Hi there,

I have been enjoying the conversation on this thread. I myself have suffered with back pain for many years, and I am currently using a Sealy mattress which I bought about 8 yrs ago, it was completely wrong for me from the start (once I opened the packaging it couldn’t be returned) and now I am desperate to find the right mattress for me.

I am willing to pay more money as the Sealy that I bought was around £300. Some on this thread are recommending buying online. In terms of my research on the internet I don’t know where to turn, there are just too many companies and too many beds/mattresses.

But also the problem is not being able to try before you buy for someone who doesn’t know anything about this industry, it is extremely difficult. I have seen a bed that I like by Next Direct the Plum Portofino Bedstead.

I just want to ask if anyone has bought a bed or Mattress from Next and what their experience was and if they are still happy with it. Or should I go for the Divan bed types, is this better for people who suffer back pain.

This would be a great help for me as I plan to go down to their showroom to see exactly what I am buying.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :(

Why don't you narrow the on line sellers down to the ones who have good return policies, so that you can unpack your next mattress and sleep on it, instead of having the same problem you had previously.
  • Thanks Tim,

I will research some more on the net, and see what I come up with.

    Thanks for the tip:)

Have been following this link with interest: Am in the market for a king sized mattress: was almost bedazzled in John Lewis today:j(jumping up and down on mattresses) into buying a 3200 pocket sprung mattress at £1009 (made by Spink & Edgar), resisted however: My initial gut instinct was to buy one from "Thesleeproom.com" at a more modest £495 - This mattress seems to tick all boxes (1400 pocket springs) and I just love the ethos of the company not to mention the fun querkyness of the web-site. Has any bought a mattress from this site or have any knowledge of the quality of the mattresses they sell ?
