This thread has gone from good old pedantry to slightly insane fussiness.
Lazy spelling and grammar are certainly annoying, but mild regional slang and alternative pronunciation I see little wrong with. It would be very dull if we all spoke perfect Queen's English, all of the time!!
I now imagine you all with plummy Home Counties accents...:rotfl:
Not me! I'm Scottish!;)My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
I am enjoying this thread. I do not like the use of padding in sentences - such as "i, myself.......", "my personal view" and basically, fundamentally, literally when whatever is not any of these.
pacific for specific
kinda
eversa (for ever so)
I could go on and on..........
At this moment in time, I truly and wholeheartedly believe in my heart of hearts that, essentially, your opinion is literally that of any right-minded man, woman, boy or girl in the country or indeed the whole wide world.0 -
Nothing to do with spelling or grammar but posts on MSE that start with 'I couldn't read and run' really annoy me. Especially when they are followed by multiple 'hugs' and 10 paragraphs of advice!0

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I’ve seen the thread here about a website called www.yournotme.com which amused me no end that someone has built a whole website with that title! :rotfl:
Then I noticed that they have an “About” page here which says that it was supposed to be “You R Not Me”, but as people started reading it as “Your Not Me” they’ve just left it like that. Personally, I think that “You R Not Me” is just as bad...
They also refer to those of us that are fully paid up members of the Grammar Police as “anal retentive”. Well, when it comes to spelling and grammar, yes I am, and proud of it!:D

Anal rententive - and able to spell. Suits me just fine.
Now, I have to go and polish my Grammar Police badge....:rotfl:0 -

I think the correct spelling is "anal-retentive"? As a proud member of the Force ( i.e. "Grammar Police" ) I shall, of course, accept any correction that may be warranted! My favourite subliminal message is;0 -

I think you would say "I am anal retentive" or "I am a member of the anal-retentive police" or "I am an anally retentive person" (no hyphen required there).0 -

Why do people use the word "of" instead of "have", or even "'ve"? For example " You should of seen his face" rather than "you should have seen his face". I don't really know why this annoys me so much. Yes I really do need to get a life!
I agree perplexed.
It also annoys me when people say 'you better' do something instead of 'you had better'.
Tony Parsons did it in his column the other day. The mind boggles.
Don't get me started on rogue apostrophes.0 -
So many sales assistants now routinely litter their explanations with unwarranted "obviously"s. "We don't give refunds any more, obviously." "Obviously we've decided to restock on Fridays now instead of Wednesdays." Have they been trained to say this as a means of surreptitiously getting the customer to start agreeing with them?0

I always think that if you wish to make comments on an open forum, you should get your spelling and grammar correct, if you do not know what to write, there is help available on the Internet!!.:j0
