I get riled when people use the word 'learn' when they mean 'teach', as in "that'll learn him" and "I learnt her that".

Another pet hate is when people, usually kids, say "won" in place of "beat", for example "we had a race and I won him".

I'm a Geordie and used to say that. :embarasse It's pretty popular up there.

This thread has gone from good old pedantry to slightly insane fussiness.

Lazy spelling and grammar are certainly annoying, but mild regional slang and alternative pronunciation I see little wrong with. It would be very dull if we all spoke perfect Queen's English, all of the time!!

I now imagine you all with plummy Home Counties accents...:rotfl:

Since the 1970s people have been saying "park up" when they park a car. "Park" is sufficient on its own.

One of my pet peeves is less/fewer, eg at a supermarket till 'Ten items or less' - should be 'Ten items or fewer'

Also - 12pm/am - it's always wrong. You can have 12.01pm/am but never 12pm/am  as 12 IS the meridien!

... 'Complement' versus 'compliment'. I came across the incorrect usage in a peer-reviewed scientific paper recently. Shall we hold a funeral service for decent editorial standards, guys?
